By this I mean that unless you are regularly meeting up in the office in person, only time zone matters.
And then once you go outside the same time zone (+/- 3 hours), you need to design everything for full async. (View Tweet)
As a concrete example, the Nordic states and Cape Town are 10000km apart, but in roughly the same time zone.
All else being equal, time zone will matter more than distance per se.
