GA vs Preview Across Snowflake CoWork Skills/Memory, Cortex Sense and Cortex Training (status as of 2026-09-14)
The question
"What exactly is GA vs preview across CoWork Skills/Memory, Cortex Sense, and Cortex Training as of a client's contract date? The Summit 2026 'GA' claims and the press-release 'preview soon' language disagree in places."
Context: the founder is a phData Deal Solutions Architect (DSA) on a Snowflake partner team. This brief gives him a feature-by-feature matrix so a client contract never promises a preview feature as generally available (GA).
Headline: As of 2026-09-14, none of the four headline items is GA. User Skills is in public preview (2026-08-18). User Memory (now called "Agent Memory") is still "public preview soon". Cortex Sense is private preview at most. Cortex Training was announced as "public preview soon", and no Snowflake release note confirms that it has shipped. The CoWork items that are GA are the core agent (GA as Snowflake Intelligence since November 2025), Artifacts (GA 2026-06-17), Deep Research (GA 2026-07-07) and MCP (Model Context Protocol) connectors. The "GA at Summit" story came mostly from secondary write-ups, including our own 2026-07-07 brief, and not from Snowflake's press release.
What we already know (from the vault)
- The parent brief says CoWork, with Artifacts, User Skills, User Memory, Deep Research, MCP connectors and the iOS app, was "GA at Summit", and cites the press release for that. This is the claim that started this question, and it is wrong for most of those items (see below). [[2026-07-07-snowflake-intelligence-vs-cortex-ai-boundary]]
- The CoWork skill-publish brief records "User Skills, Skill Catalog 'GA soon'". The press release actually says User Skills is "public preview soon", and only Skill Catalog is "generally available soon". [[2026-07-08-cortex-agent-cowork-skill-native-publish]]
- The industry-plugins brief records the prebuilt domain plugins as "private preview soon" per the Snowflake CoWork blog. [[2026-07-08-cowork-industry-plugins-vs-caf-delivery]]
- The Pupius four-axis audit says Cortex Training "was announced without a GA date", and that several CoWork pieces were "preview soon" at Summit, not GA. That matches this brief. [[2026-09-12-pupius-four-axis-snowflake-data-ai-strategy]]
- The Cortex Code (CoCo) surface brief has already pinned the CoCo-side statuses: Snowsight GA 2026-03-09, CLI GA 2026-02-02, Cloud Agents not deployable. This brief does not repeat them. [[2026-09-13-cortex-code-client-deployable-surface-p3-p4]]
What the web says
All statuses below were observed on 2026-09-14 unless noted otherwise. Source rank: release notes > press release > product page > third party.
The matrix
| Feature | Status on 2026-09-14 | What the press release said (2026-06-02) | Primary source + date of status change | Caveats / confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CoWork core agent (formerly Snowflake Intelligence) | GA | (rename; core not footnoted) | GA 2025-11-04 as Snowflake Intelligence (vault: [[2026-07-07-snowflake-intelligence-vs-cortex-ai-boundary]]) | High. Resource budgets for CoWork shipped 2026-03-11 |
| Cortex Agents (the engine under CoWork) | GA | n/a | GA 2025-11-04. The Coding Agent went GA 2026-08-26 and the async API went GA 2026-08-30; the code execution tool is still in Preview (2026-08-20) | High. Sub-features have mixed status; name each one in a contract |
| User Skills (CoWork) | Public preview | "public preview soon" | Release note "User skills in Snowflake CoWork (Preview)", 2026-08-18 | High. Not GA |
| Skill Catalog | Not confirmed | "generally available soon" | No release note found in the 2026 feature-release index | Low. Treat as not shipped until a release note exists |
| User Memory / "Agent Memory" | Announced only ("public preview soon") | "public preview soon" | CoWork product page still says "Agent Memory, public preview soon" (observed 2026-09-14 via search snippet). No release note | Medium. Renamed from "User Memory" to "Agent Memory" on the product page |
| Cortex Sense | Private preview at most | "private preview soon" | No Snowflake release note (private previews usually do not get public release notes). Third parties (Atlan, DataHub) describe it as private preview | Medium. Do not scope a deliverable on it without a written Snowflake private-preview enrollment |
| Cortex Sense prebuilt domain plugins (finance, sales) | Announced only / private preview | "private preview soon" (blog) | No release note | Low |
| Cortex Training (fine-tuning open-weight models on managed GPUs) | Unconfirmed: public preview claimed by third parties, not confirmed by Snowflake | "public preview soon" | No release note found in the 2026 feature-release index. Atlan and an IT Brief summary say "public preview" | Low. A public preview is not GA in either case |
| Artifacts (CoWork) | GA | "generally available soon" | Preview 2026-03-19, then GA 2026-06-17 (release notes) | High |
| Deep Research (CoWork) | GA | "generally available soon" | GA 2026-07-07 (release notes) | High |
| Automations (CoWork) | Public preview | not in the release | "Automations in Snowflake CoWork (Public Preview)", 2026-08-06 | High. Not to be confused with CoCo automations (Preview, 2026-08-21) |
| MCP connectors | GA | "generally available" | Press release, 2026-06-02. External OAuth and configurable scopes for MCP servers went GA 2026-07-22 | High |
| CoWork iOS app | Not confirmed | "generally available soon" | No release note found | Low |
| CoWork Slackbot | Announced only / private preview | "private preview soon" | No release note | Low |
| Microsoft Excel extension | Announced only / private preview | "private preview soon" | No release note | Low |
- The press release uses footnoted status labels ("generally available soon", "public preview soon", "private preview soon"). Only MCP connectors carried a plain "generally available". (Snowflake CoWork press release, 2026-06-02)
- The Snowflake 2026 feature-release index (latest entry 2026-09-14) lists the CoWork and Agents entries in the matrix above. It has no entry for Cortex Sense, Cortex Training, User/Agent Memory, Skill Catalog, the iOS app, Slackbot or Excel. (Feature updates earlier in 2026; User skills preview note; current feature updates)
- Third-party summaries state things more firmly than Snowflake does. Atlan calls Cortex Training "public preview as of June 2026", while the press release on the same day said "soon". (Atlan: Cortex Training; Atlan: CoWork)
- Constellation Research's Summit write-up presents Cortex Training without a GA date. (Constellation Research)
- The CoWork product page still says "Agent Memory, public preview soon" three months after Summit. (Snowflake CoWork product page)
- Region and edition caveats could not be confirmed within this brief's research caps. No feature-level region, cloud or edition pages were fetched. Cortex features have historically varied by region and cross-region inference setting, so check the feature doc for the client's region before signing.
Convergences and contradictions
- Where the disagreement comes from. There was no "Summit GA" claim from Snowflake for Skills, Memory, Sense or Training. The press release labelled each one "soon", at public or private preview. The GA framing came from secondary summaries (the Medium feature summary and Atlan recaps) and from our own 2026-07-07 brief. That brief rolled the whole CoWork feature list into "GA at Summit" when only the core agent and MCP connectors were GA. The 2026-07-08 skill-publish brief also turned User Skills' "public preview soon" into "GA soon". Both vault notes need correcting where they are cited.
- Snowflake mostly shipped what it said it would, but slowly. The "GA soon" items Artifacts and Deep Research reached GA within about 5 weeks. The "public preview soon" item User Skills took about 11 weeks. Memory ("public preview soon") and Sense ("private preview soon") have not reached their announced stage in Snowflake's public record after 14+ weeks.
- Convergence with [[2026-09-12-pupius-four-axis-snowflake-data-ai-strategy]]: that brief's "preview soon, not GA" and "no GA date" reading of Training holds up against the primary sources.
Synthesis for RDCO
Contract rule: the release note is the evidence; the press release is not. For a phData Statement of Work (SOW), a feature can be promised as production-grade only if a docs.snowflake.com release note says "General availability" and the feature doc has no preview banner. On today's evidence, the promisable CoWork surface is the core agent, Cortex Agents (GA sub-features only), Artifacts, Deep Research and MCP connectors. User Skills and Automations are public preview. They can be used in a pilot, but a contract should label them as preview dependencies. Preview features generally carry no SLA (service-level agreement) and can change without notice. Cortex Sense, Agent Memory, Cortex Training, Skill Catalog, the iOS app, Slackbot and Excel should not appear in a deliverable as anything more than "roadmap, subject to Snowflake availability".
This matters most for the semantic-layer pitch. The 2026-07-08 Cortex Sense reframe ("Cortex Sense raises your accuracy; phData supplies the authority and proof") assumes Sense is something a client can switch on. It cannot yet. A DSA who uses the 23%-to-83% accuracy line in a proposal is quoting a private-preview (or not-yet-private) capability. The safer version: phData builds the governed semantic views now on GA objects, and they become Cortex Sense's highest-authority input when Sense ships. That is also the stronger pitch, because the work is justified without Sense and becomes more valuable once it arrives.
Cortex Training is not a deliverable, even if it is in public preview. Any fine-tuning scope should be framed as an experiment in a sandbox account. The contract should include a fallback to GA Cortex AI functions or prompt-level approaches if Training's terms or pricing change.
Fix the vault. Two of our own briefs carry overstated statuses, and later briefs cite them. Until they are corrected, this matrix should be the single status reference, re-verified at each contract date. It is a snapshot, not a standing truth.
Why this is in the vault
It gives the phData DSA/TAL role a dated, source-cited GA-vs-preview matrix to check before any SOW names CoWork Skills/Memory, Cortex Sense or Cortex Training. It also corrects the overstated "GA at Summit" status in [[2026-07-07-snowflake-intelligence-vs-cortex-ai-boundary]] and [[2026-07-08-cortex-agent-cowork-skill-native-publish]].
Open follow-ups
- Has Cortex Training actually entered public preview, and in which regions, clouds and editions? The only evidence found is third-party. The Cortex Training feature doc page and its preview banner were not fetched.
- What exactly do Snowflake's Preview Terms say about SLA, support and data handling for public-preview features, and how should a phData SOW word a "preview dependency" clause?
- Cortex Sense private-preview enrollment: what are the eligibility criteria, and can a partner nominate a client account?
- Did the Skill Catalog and CoWork iOS app ("GA soon") ship without a release note, or are they still pending?
