FDE Search-Share Baseline: The BEFORE Snapshot (2026-05-29)
The question
Search-share baseline (Google Trends + Google search snapshot) on "fractional FDE," "fractional forward-deployed engineer," "FDE for data teams" BEFORE RDCO ships the term-claiming Sanity Check piece. Time-sensitive — the ~one-quarter defensibility window starts ticking now.
This is purely a baseline-capture exercise. The goal is a reusable before-state: who ranks for these terms TODAY and whether each phrase is dominated by employee-hiring usage vs vendor-service usage, so a re-run after RDCO ships its term-claiming piece can diff against it and show whether the early-mover citation play moved the needle.
What we already know (from the vault)
- [[research/2026-05-28-fractional-fde-service-whitespace-check]] — The brief that surfaced this follow-up. Verdict: the broad "fractional FDE-as-a-service" category is no longer empty (OpenAI Deployment Co, Anthropic JV, EY, Salesforce partner network, Deloitte, Utsubo's "Forward Deployed Studio"), but the data-team vertical qualifier is still unclaimed — defensible for ~one quarter, probably less. Explicitly listed "search-share baseline before claiming" as open follow-up #3.
- [[research/2026-05-27-forward-deployed-engineer-pricing-rdco-framing]] — FDE is overwhelmingly an employee role title across the 2026 literature; no public customer-side pricing standard; RDCO would be coining the service-vendor sense.
- [[research/2026-05-24-data-team-solo-operator-competitor-confirm]] — Empty niche re-confirmed but window tightened to 6-12 months as Snowflake/dbt first-party content fills the gap.
- [[concepts/2026-05-13-fde-asymmetric-edge-rdco-positioning]] — RDCO's FDE positioning against the enterprise playbook; data-team vertical + MAC artifact + productize-not-advise as the differentiators.
- [[research/2026-04-22-agent-seo-state-of-the-discipline]] — The GEO / agent-SEO / LLM-citation surface playbook that the term-claiming move is meant to exploit (first indexed answer = first LLM-cited source).
What the web says
Headline: all three phrases are dominated by employee-hiring / definitional usage. No vendor publicly owns any of the three as a branded service category. "FDE for data teams" returns zero exact-match owners — the cleanest whitespace of the three.
Volume context (the rising tide that makes this worth claiming now): FDE as a role is exploding. Indeed job postings went from 643 (Apr 2025) to 5,300+ (Apr 2026) — roughly +729% YoY. a16z called it "the hottest job in startups," 800% growth in 2025. Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, Databricks all hiring. This is a fast-rising search term, which is exactly why the before-state matters: interest is climbing regardless of RDCO, so a naive after-the-fact traffic bump would be confounded by the category tide. The diff must look at who ranks for the vendor/data-team framing, not just raw volume.
Per-phrase ownership today:
"fractional forward-deployed engineer" / "fractional FDE" — The phrase IS now in the wild, but every page-1 owner is hiring-side, not vendor-side.
gofractional.com(a fractional-talent marketplace) andfractionaljobs.iorank — both are matchmaking platforms placing fractional FDEs as hires/contractors. fractionaljobs.io's top result is a literal job post: "We're looking for a Fractional Forward-Deployed Engineer who can work directly with our design partners." No one leads with "we ARE a fractional FDE service you retain." The vendor-service sense remains uncoined for these exact phrases."FDE for data teams" — No exact-match owner. Search returns only generic definitional content (rocketlane, pragmaticengineer, PostHog, Wikipedia, kiadev, futureventures, Invisible, Salesforce, OpenAI careers). None of these pages leads with or brands "FDE for data teams." This is the cleanest whitespace — and it is the qualifier RDCO intends to own.
Adjacent branded claimant — Utsubo — Coins and leads with "Forward Deployed Engineer Studio" / "FDE Studio" targeting the general SMB gap, NOT data teams, and does NOT use any of the three exact phrases. Closest competitor by buyer-band, but a different category term and a different vertical. Does not foreclose RDCO's data-team claim.
Google Trends: Direct Trends analytics were not machine-readable via search (trends.google.com requires interactive/authenticated capture). Proxy signal is unambiguous and directionally sufficient for a baseline: role-level demand +729% YoY (Indeed), 247 active FDE postings across 133 companies as of Apr 30 2026 (FDE Pulse). The base term "forward deployed engineer" is in steep ascent; the modifier phrases ("fractional," "for data teams") are early on that curve. FOLLOW-UP: capture an actual Trends screenshot via the Chrome MCP for a numeric anchor (see open follow-ups).
Convergences and contradictions
- Convergence with the 2026-05-28 whitespace brief: That brief said the data-team vertical qualifier was still defensible. The search snapshot confirms it empirically — "FDE for data teams" has zero branded owners today. The before-state matches the strategic read.
- Convergence on the employee-title reflex: The 2026-05-27 brief warned "FDE" reads as a hire-one title. The SERP proves it — even the "fractional" modifier resolves to hiring marketplaces (gofractional, fractionaljobs), not retained services. Buyer reflex is unchanged. This validates the whitespace brief's "do NOT make FDE the hero line" guidance.
- Convergence with the window-closing warning: The phrase "fractional forward-deployed engineer" went from essentially absent to having marketplace page-1 owners. The category tide is rising fast; the vendor-service / data-team framing is the still-open slice. The quarter-long window read holds.
- Contradiction / nuance vs the whitespace brief: The 28th brief framed "fractional FDE" as "appears once in passing" (Gigged.AI). The 29th snapshot shows it has hardened slightly — now two named hiring marketplaces (gofractional, fractionaljobs) rank for it. Still hiring-side, not vendor-side, so the strategic conclusion is intact, but the term is coining faster on the hiring axis than the 28th read implied. Mild reinforcement of urgency.
Synthesis for RDCO
The baseline is captured and it is favorable to ship now. Snapshot for the after-comparison:
| Phrase | Page-1 owners today (2026-05-29) | Employee-hire vs vendor-service usage | Rough interest level |
|---|---|---|---|
| "fractional FDE" | rocketlane, negreflorian, pragmaticengineer, index.dev, feact.ai, fwddeploy.com, gofractional, hypernestlabs (all definitional or hiring-marketplace) | Employee/contractor-hire dominant; no vendor-service brand | Rising (modifier on a +729%-YoY base term); low absolute |
| "fractional forward-deployed engineer" | gofractional.com (403 to bots, marketplace), fractionaljobs.io (live job post), amitkoth, hypernestlabs | Employee/contractor-hire dominant; literal job posts rank #1 | Rising; low absolute; hardening on the hiring axis |
| "FDE for data teams" | NONE exact-match — only generic definitional (rocketlane, pragmaticengineer, PostHog, Wikipedia, Salesforce, OpenAI careers) | Neither — no one brands this phrase at all | Lowest of the three; cleanest whitespace |
Reusable diff protocol for the re-run (after RDCO ships):
- Re-search each of the three exact phrases. Record page-1 owners. Diff against the table above.
- Success signal = RDCO/raydata.co/Sanity Check appears page-1 for "FDE for data teams" (the achievable win) and/or shifts at least one "fractional FDE" page-1 slot from hiring-marketplace to vendor-service framing.
- Secondary signal = LLM-citation test: ask a fresh model "what is a fractional FDE for data teams" and check whether RDCO is cited. (Zero baseline today — no one owns the phrase, so any citation is net-new.)
- Control for the category tide: do not read raw "forward deployed engineer" volume as RDCO's lift — that rises regardless. Read only the vendor-service / data-team-qualified framing ownership.
Implication: Ship the term-claiming Sanity Check piece + the raydata.co subhead + the public reference page. "FDE for data teams" is genuinely unclaimed; "fractional FDE" is being colonized on the hiring axis (urgency), and the vendor-service meaning is still open. The before-state is as clean as it will get — every week of delay raises the odds a marketplace or studio adds the data-team qualifier first.
Open follow-ups
- Numeric Google Trends anchor. Capture an actual trends.google.com screenshot via the Chrome MCP (or playwright) for "forward deployed engineer," "fractional FDE," "FDE for data teams" with a 12-month window, so the re-run has a numeric (not just SERP-ownership) baseline. WebSearch/WebFetch can't read the interactive Trends UI.
- Schedule the re-run. Set a ~90-day reminder (≈2026-08-27) to re-run this exact protocol after the Sanity Check piece ships, and diff against the table above.
- Watch the two hardening marketplaces. gofractional.com and fractionaljobs.io are the closest to flipping "fractional FDE" from hiring to vendor framing. If either adds a data-team vertical landing page, RDCO's cleanest qualifier narrows. Add to the competitor-watch loop.
