(2011). “The Future of Immersive Instructional Design for the Global Knowledge Economy: A Case Study of an IBM Project Management Training in Virtual Worlds.” International Journal of Web Based Learning and Teaching Technologies, 6(3), 14-34. The bridge paper showing OpSim methodology translated into virtual-world / immersive simulation. Less cited than the others but the most relevant to RDCO’s own situation — it’s the paper about how to take a face-to-face simulation method and put it into a software environment. Worth reading for the implementation pattern, not just the empirical claim.
Earlier Scribner-lab technical reports
Two early DiBello + Scribner technical reports also surface in citation chains: “Knowledge acquisition at work” (1991) and “Coordinating knowledge systems: a case study” (1992), both from the Laboratory for Cognitive Studies of Work at CUNY. These are the methodological seeds of the rest of the corpus. Hard to retrieve, but worth knowing they exist if anyone tries to argue her work has no academic pedigree.
Convergences and contradictions
Convergences with the Cedric/Commoncog “expertise = pattern matching from many examples” thesis:
- DiBello’s whole research program supports the central Commoncog claim: experts reason from tacit, structurally-organized mental models built up through repeated exposure to outcomes, not from explicit rules. Her knowledge-elicitation methods only work because the expert’s knowledge isn’t articulable — exactly Cedric’s frame.
- Her “cognitive reorganization” mechanism is a stronger version of perceptual learning: simulations don’t just teach new patterns, they restructure how experts chunk the problem space. This generalizes the chicken-sexing / radiologist literature that the Commoncog perceptual-learning notes already cite.
- Her industry-deployment evidence (biotech, transit, IBM, mining) gives the framework empirical reach beyond the small-sample expert studies (chess, firefighting, medicine) that dominate Klein/Ericsson’s work.
Where her work complicates the Commoncog thesis:
- DiBello’s cognitive-reorganization claim implies that expertise can be radically accelerated by carefully designed simulation — months instead of years. Cedric’s deliberate-practice writing is more conservative about acceleration ceilings. If DiBello is right, the Ericsson “10,000 hours” framing is over-stated for domains where you can build a high-fidelity activity-based simulator. RDCO’s pitch leans toward the DiBello side already, but it’s worth flagging the tension.
- Most of her quantitative claims (7,000+ trainees, “months of acceleration”) come from her own consulting practice and NSF SBIR reports, not from independent peer-reviewed replications. The methodology is published; the longitudinal effectiveness numbers mostly aren’t. This is a real evidentiary gap and an opportunity for an independent group to replicate.
- The peer-reviewed corpus is narrower than the consulting reach suggests. Roughly a dozen journal/handbook pieces. Citing her as “extensively peer-reviewed” would be over-claiming; “extensively grant-funded with selective high-impact peer-reviewed publication” is the accurate frame.
Synthesis for RDCO
The two must-reads for RDCO’s evidence base are the 2014 Accelerated Expertise book (chapters DiBello authored) and the 2009 Mind, Culture, and Activity biotech paper. The book is the canonical methodology synthesis and gives RDCO a single citable artifact for the “agents become expert through structured exposure to examples plus feedback” claim. The 2009 MCA paper is the cleanest single longitudinal empirical demonstration — front-line workers, real factory, sustained outcomes, peer-reviewed venue, NSF funding. Together they cover both the theory and a concrete N>1 empirical anchor. The Oxford Handbook chapter (2019) is the right one-page summary to link in any RDCO landing-page or essay where we’re claiming pedigree without asking the reader to read 400 pages.
Where DiBello strengthens RDCO’s evidence base: the core RDCO claim that you build agent capability by structuring exposure to expert-judgment situations (not by writing more rules) maps almost one-to-one onto her cognitive-reorganization mechanism. We can credibly say “this isn’t an LLM-era invention — DiBello’s lab has been running this protocol on humans in industry for 20+ years, with NSF funding and peer-reviewed longitudinal results, and the time-to-proficiency compressions are real.” That’s a much sturdier rhetorical posture than citing the deliberate-practice literature, which has been chewed over and re-litigated in pop-psychology coverage. DiBello is fresh, technically-credentialed, and not yet captured by the discourse.
Where citing her would be thin: any quantitative claim about how much faster expertise can be acquired. Her “months of acceleration” headline comes from internal WTRI reports, not independent replication. If RDCO wants to write something like “DiBello’s research shows simulation training cuts time-to-proficiency by 60%,” we’d be standing on grant reports, not peer review. Stick to the mechanism claim (cognitive reorganization via activity-based simulation) and the demonstration claim (it worked in biotech and at NYCTA), and we’re on solid peer-reviewed ground. Avoid the headline acceleration percentages.
Concrete recommendation: Add DiBello to the citation chain for the MAC content series and the RDCO landing page, anchored on the 2014 book and the 2019 Oxford chapter as primary sources. Acquire Accelerated Expertise (Routledge hardback or Kindle, ~$50) for the founder’s reference shelf. Add 04-people/lia-dibello.md to the vault CRM as the highest-priority tracked author surfaced from the Apr 19 backfill. When the next Sanity Check issue touches “how agents acquire expertise,” lead with the DiBello frame instead of the Ericsson frame — DiBello’s industry-deployment evidence is closer to RDCO’s actual customer situation than Ericsson’s chess-master corpus.
Open follow-ups
- What are the actual quantitative effect sizes from the published peer-reviewed studies (NYCTA, biotech) — not the WTRI marketing numbers? Need to read both papers carefully and pull the specific time-to-proficiency or error-rate deltas with their N and CIs.
- Are there any independent replications of OpSim/Strategic Rehearsal methodology by labs not affiliated with DiBello/WTRI? Critical for RDCO’s evidence-strength claim.
- Has DiBello (or anyone in the NDM community) published anything specifically applying her methodology to AI agents or LLM training? She has appeared at AI for Good (ITU), so she’s at least adjacent — worth checking for primary writing.
- What is the actual content of the FutureView Profiler? If it’s a non-verbal mental-model elicitation instrument, RDCO might be able to adapt the underlying assessment design for evaluating whether an agent has the right mental model of a business — a possible RDCO methodology contribution.
- How does her conception of “cognitive agility” map to the eval-set-curation discipline RDCO is already practicing? Does her framework give us a sharper vocabulary for what we’re doing, or is it a different construct in the same vicinity?
