1. The book in one paragraph
Wissner-Gross and Diamandis argue that every civilizational revolution follows the same four-stage arc — legibility, harnessing, institutionalization, abundance — and that AI is now collapsing expert cognition into a commodity utility the same way the Industrial Revolution collapsed muscle. The bottleneck shifts from intelligence to targeting: knowing what to aim at and how to verify you hit it. They propose fifteen moonshot missions, a ten-gear implementation engine (targeting systems, outcome-based procurement, compute escrow, data trusts, decision logs, and more), and a three-phase Solution Wavefront that solves pure-information domains by 2027, physical-world domains by 2031, and planetary systems by 2035. The closing thesis: once intelligence is cheap, the scarce resource is Aiming — choosing purposes worthy of the power.
2. The five frameworks that matter for RDCO
L0-L5 Maturation Curve (Ch 3). Domains evolve from ill-posed muddle (L0) through measurable, repeatable, automated, and industrialized stages to full commoditization (L5). Most enterprise data teams sit at L1-L2 — they can measure things but still pay for effort rather than outcomes. RDCO’s content and consulting should help teams diagnose their level and see the infrastructure required for L3-L4. This is a publishable Sanity Check framework readers can self-score against.
Automate Evaluation Before Work (Ch 3, Ch 5). The book’s most operationally important principle: build the targeting system and test harness before deploying agents. This validates RDCO’s entire positioning. We are not building AI agents; we are building the evaluation layer that tells you whether agents work. Every consulting engagement and every Sanity Check framework should lead with this sequence.
Four-Stage Revolution Pattern (Ch 1). Legibility, Harnessing, Institutionalization, Abundance. The harness thesis from Garry Tan maps directly onto stage two. RDCO operates at the Legibility-to-Harnessing transition — making data work measurable and building the eval infrastructure that converts measurement into repeatable outcomes. This positions us ahead of the services firms still selling artisanal effort.
Abundance Flywheel (Ch 6). Clear metrics attract capital, capital produces results, results validate the metric, success draws participants. This describes what Sanity Check is building: frameworks and benchmarks that create a self-reinforcing loop of audience trust. The flywheel also applies to RDCO’s vault: each cross-referenced insight makes the next one more valuable, compounding knowledge infrastructure over time.
The Muddle vs. The Rails (Ch 2, Ch 4, Ch 8). The default path for most organizations is the Muddle: AI absorbed into existing bureaucracy, producing dashboards faster but not changing decisions. The alternative is building Rails — targeting systems, outcome procurement, decision logs. RDCO’s strategic value is helping clients distinguish between the two and avoid the Muddle. Every phData consulting engagement should be evaluated against this binary.
3. Where RDCO is on the Solve Everything map
Using the three diagnostic questions from Ch 1: (1) Do we have instrumented legibility with public scoring? Partially — the vault tracks frameworks and cross-checks, but we don’t publish scorecards yet. (2) Does our harness survive adversarial stress testing? Early stage — the cross-check agent runs contradiction scans, but it’s not yet a rigorous red-team process. (3) Have we aligned incentives so buyers pay for outcomes rather than effort? No — we don’t have paying clients yet.
On the L0-L5 curve, RDCO sits at L2 transitioning to L3. We have measurable processes (vault indexing, content pipelines, agent architecture) and repeatable SOPs, but automation handles maybe 40% of routine work, not 80%. We are not yet at L4 (industrialized, outcome-based purchasing) because we lack the revenue structure to test outcome pricing.
On the four-stage revolution pattern, RDCO is at the Harnessing stage — we have legibility (the vault, the frameworks) and are building harnesses (the agent stack, Sanity Check’s eval-first positioning), but we haven’t institutionalized anything externally yet.
Honest assessment: we’re well-positioned directionally but early operationally. The infrastructure is ahead of the revenue.
4. Strategic implications for Mode B (if phData)
If the founder takes phData and RDCO enters Mode B, Solve Everything says three things clearly:
Build targeting systems, not products. Mode B’s stable cash flow should fund the eval infrastructure that Mode A couldn’t afford to wait for. Specifically: publish the L0-L5 diagnostic as a Sanity Check framework, build the Spec-to-Artifact scoring methodology for data pipelines, and formalize the cross-check agent into a repeatable red-team process. These are the rails.
Use the foundry window. Ch 4’s 18-month regulatory window means the standards being set now will lock in. Mode B gives RDCO access to phData’s client base to test frameworks in real environments. That exposure during the window is more valuable than independent revenue would be.
Defer agent deployment, invest in evaluation. The book is explicit: skipping to agent deployment without eval infrastructure is the Muddle Path. Mode B should resist the temptation to ship AI tools and instead accumulate the targeting-system expertise that makes those tools trustworthy when they do ship.
5. Sanity Check positioning
The book reframes Sanity Check from a newsletter into an aiming service. The Epilogue’s core insight — that purpose becomes the scarce resource post-abundance — means Sanity Check’s value is not providing intelligence (commodity) but providing direction. Which questions matter. Which claims hold under scrutiny. Which frameworks actually work.
Ch 6’s targeting-systems concept makes this concrete: Sanity Check should function as a public targeting system for the data industry. Each issue defines a measurable claim, stress-tests it against evidence, and gives the reader a diagnostic they can apply to their own work. The “automate evaluation before work” principle from Ch 3 becomes the editorial thesis: before you adopt the tool, build the scorecard that tells you whether it works.
Practically, this means every Sanity Check issue should close with what Ch 9 calls a “Before Monday Noon” action — one concrete thing the reader can measure or implement immediately. Not “stay curious.” A verb and a target.
6. What we disagree with or should pressure-test
Timeline optimism. The Solution Wavefront assumes smooth cascading from information domains to physical domains. The harness-thesis dissent doc flags that domain-specific data moats and regulatory friction will create uneven progress. Biology will not follow math’s timeline.
Targeting-system capture. The book warns about Spec Capture (teaching to the test) but underestimates how quickly outcome metrics get gamed in practice. RDCO’s data-quality framework work shows that measurement itself introduces distortion. Who controls the targeting system controls the revolution — the book treats this as a solvable governance problem, but it may be a permanent tension.
Compute abundance assumption. The entire framework depends on compute costs collapsing to the electricity floor. If energy constraints, chip supply, or geopolitics slow that curve, the phase transitions stall. The “data is the real moat” counter-argument gains weight in a compute-constrained world because scarce compute makes proprietary training data more valuable, not less.
Safety by attraction is undertested. The claim that routing compute toward beneficial moonshots starves malicious actors assumes a zero-sum compute market. If abundance is real, bad actors get cheap compute too. This deserves a dedicated Sanity Check issue.
Missing: distribution and adoption. The book is strong on what to build and weak on how to get organizations to actually adopt outcome-based procurement. The Muddle is the default for a reason — institutional inertia is not a bug to be engineered away but a feature of how large organizations manage risk.
