"The 1st Step to Making Money Online" — Information Advantage as Niche Selection (Ship30for30)
Why this is in the vault
Part 2 of Cole's "First Dollar Roadmap" series names a selection method — audit Jobs / Hobbies / Experiences for an "Information Advantage" — that is the same underlying claim as his "Personality Content" framing from the prior day's Write With AI cross-post, applied one layer earlier (picking the niche, not writing inside it).
The core argument
Cole argues the first and most-skipped step in building a writing business is choosing a niche where the writer already holds an "Information Advantage" — simply knowing more about a topic than the average person, acquired through a past job, a sustained hobby, or a rare personal experience. He rejects "pick whatever seems popular or lucrative" as a strategy, arguing that skipping the Information Advantage step doubles the work: the writer now has to learn both the marketing/monetization skills (writing, hooks, email, landing pages — each maybe 5-10 hours to reach competence) and the subject matter from zero, simultaneously. His selection method: list every job, hobby, and meaningful experience; stack-rank by depth of knowledge; take the top 3-5 and publish across all of them; then let engagement data (not intuition, not "which niche is most lucrative") pick the winner — watching for small relative outliers (a post that gets 3x a normal post's views is a real signal even at low absolute numbers). He closes by preempting the "but what's the most lucrative niche" objection: lucrativeness is a property of the writer's fit to the niche, not the niche itself, so the objectively "best" niche is worthless without an owned Information Advantage and genuine multi-year interest to sustain it.
The selection method in four steps: audit every job, hobby, and meaningful experience as a candidate Information Advantage (most people undercount their own list); rank candidates by depth of knowledge, not by presumed lucrativeness; test by publishing across the top 3-5 candidates and letting relative engagement — small outliers count — select the niche empirically; commit to whichever clears all three bars (real Information Advantage, measured engagement, durable personal interest), not whichever looks theoretically most lucrative.
Mapping against Ray Data Co
Same underlying claim as 2026-09-07-writewithai-commodity-vs-personality-content, Cole's "Personality Content" piece filed the day before — there he argued AI can't originate content built from lived facts only one person has; here he argues the selection of what to write about should be driven by exactly that same owned, non-commodity knowledge. Applied to Ray Data Co directly: Sanity Check's Information Advantage is the founder's data-engineering-to-harness-engineering path (phData seat, agent-deployer positioning, hands-on multi-agent build experience) — not a generically "AI newsletter" niche anyone with a ChatGPT subscription could occupy. The stack-rank-then-measure-engagement method is also a usable, low-cost validator for open positioning questions already in flight (e.g. Organizational Intelligence framing, harness-engineering thesis emphasis) — publish across 2-3 framings and let relative engagement pick the winner rather than deciding by internal debate alone. Standing self-promo: both AI Writing Skool CTAs (top banner + closing PS) are house cross-promotion for Cole's own paid community, not a third-party sponsor.
⚠️ Sponsorship
sponsored: true, sponsor_entity: self. No third-party paid placement. Both CTAs (top banner and closing PS) promote Cole's own paid community, "AI Writing Skool" — house self-promo consistent with Ship30for30's standing pattern (README: "heavy on marketing-style CTAs, sponsor detection noisy"). Disclosed per the skill's self-promo rule; does not affect the extractable technique's validity.
