The core argument

Built around Matthew Symonds' 2003 book Softwar, the case argues Oracle's dominance wasn't inevitable — it came from specific, risky decisions: committing early to SQL and the relational model when IBM wavered, rewriting Oracle Version 2 entirely in C (1978–83) for cross-architecture portability, and targeting minicomputers where IBM avoided direct competition. Rival Ingres had arguably superior technical design but lost ground when its lead architect, Michael Stonebraker, refused to back SQL at ANSI standards meetings. Cullinet, the CODASYL-standard market leader, failed to transition. Sybase built a more sophisticated client/server architecture but faltered on strategic errors (SAP integration, Microsoft licensing). Ellison: "I only ever picked the high-risk approach when I thought that it would increase our chance of winning." The case's throughline: winners in a new-technology land-grab often emerge not from superior engineering but from committing to the standard that becomes ubiquitous, then building sales muscle proportional to the product.
