"Welcome to June 1, 2026" — @Alex Wissner-Gross
Why this is in the vault
A daily frontier digest whose lead beats — "memory is now worth more than oil" and Anthropic's confidential IPO filing — directly corroborate RDCO's chip/memory capital-cycle investing thesis and its agent-capability frame.
Issue contents
Curation digest, ~15 linked items strung into a single thematic narrative (the Singularity miniaturizing, then sprawling across hardware, energy, robotics, space, biology, and markets). Lead-to-tail beats:
- On-device AI: PrismML's Bonsai Image 4B — compact 1-bit/ternary diffusion models, first image class to run on an iPhone. Apple reportedly struggling to shrink Gemini for on-device, shopping acquisitions.
- Biodefense / model character: OpenAI launched Rosalind Biodefense (GPT-Rosalind for epidemiology/pandemic prep). Figma's CEO called Anthropic's Opus 4.8 "a very strange model" — honest but judgmental/hedging/sycophantic.
- Hardware repricing (load-bearing): Nvidia N1 / N1X Arm SoCs (reportedly ~20 cores). Samsung, SK Hynix, Micron each cross a trillion-dollar market cap, together ~22% above the three biggest oil firms. Verdict quoted: "memory is now worth more than oil."
- Wearables / DC sprawl / energy: Meta testing an AI pendant, chasing 10M wearable sales in H2 2026. SoftBank committing up to EUR 75B to 5GW of French AI data-center capacity. MIT low-temp lithium-from-hard-rock process at ~half cost. White House routing 50+ tons of weapons-grade plutonium to five private firms for reactor fuel.
- Robotics: OpenAI Robotics hiring (robots to help build AI infra, then serve all). Nagoya rat-hindlimb exoskeleton. Foundation Future Industries testing humanoid logistics in hazardous zones, US-backed Ukraine trials, battlefield deployment targeted within 18 months.
- Space / frontier: NASA traced a New England meteorite to a likely Cape Cod Bay splashdown; phased plan for a lunar South Pole base this decade; deep-learning model spotted a manganese "bathtub ring" hinting at a stable ancient Mars ocean. UAP politics heating (NYT on "demons" framing; Rep. Burlison's MITRE interrogatories, files to 1930 due in 45 days).
- Biology: Google's Debug program seeking to release up to 32M treated mosquitoes (FL/CA). Putin's $26B state longevity program. Revolution Medicines' Daraxonrasib (pancreatic-cancer therapy) drew an ASCO standing ovation.
- Markets / closer (load-bearing): Analysts warn AI "dark output" could become the majority of economic activity yet stay near-uncountable. Chinese tech charging up to $9k for curated EV/robotaxi/humanoid-lab tours. Coinbase + Kalshi bring perpetual crypto futures to US investors on regulated exchanges. Rival super PACs (Public First for Anthropic, Leading the Future for OpenAI) flooding the midterms. Anthropic confidentially filed for an IPO, poised to beat OpenAI to a Wall Street debut this fall.
Closing line: "the future was a public offering nobody could refuse."
Mapping against Ray Data Co
- Chip/memory capital-cycle thesis (STRONG, direct). "Memory is now worth more than oil" with all three majors above $1T market cap is a real-time data point feeding RDCO's active memory-cycle thesis ([[2026-05-18-memory-cycle-v1.1]]). Note the framing risk: trillion-dollar caps top-tick the visible phase of the cycle. For a position/capital-cycle horizon this reads more as late-phase confirmation than entry signal — exactly the over-extension the backtests warned about. Worth a direction check against the EDGAR capex pulse before treating it as thesis tailwind.
- Agent-capability thesis (MEDIUM). On-device image models (Bonsai 4B on iPhone) and the Opus 4.8 "strange model" personality critique both bear on where frontier agent capability and deployment surface are heading — the substrate the COO agent runs on. The sycophancy/hedging critique is a useful external calibration signal for model-character expectations.
- Investing watchlist / smart-money (MEDIUM). Anthropic's confidential IPO filing is the standout hard-news item: a tradable liquidity event in the frontier-lab layer this fall. Belongs on the radar even if RDCO is not a primary-issuance buyer. Coinbase/Kalshi perpetual futures and the AI-super-PAC arms race are regulatory-regime context.
- Sanity Check / content-as-product (WEAK-MEDIUM). "AI dark output becomes the majority of activity yet stays uncountable" is a genuinely original Sanity Check seed — measurement collapse in an AI economy is a data-engineering-flavored angle the audience would not get from a generic AI newsletter. Candidate, not a derivative restatement.
