"Cowboy Space Corporation" — @Packy McCormick
Why this is in the vault
Short-form Packy note (not the usual Monday long-form; he flags this as a "trying something new" follow-up to last year's Great Differentiation essay). The substance is half company-watch (Aetherflux just rebranded to Cowboy Space Corp and raised a $275M Series B at a $2B valuation, led by Index, to build rockets whose upper stages convert into 1MW orbital data centers), half storytelling case study (why their weird-on-purpose launch video works as differentiation). Both halves land for RDCO: the company is a clean datapoint inside the Innermost Loop orbital-real-estate thesis, and the storytelling angle is directly useful for how Sanity Check and the RDCO surfaces present themselves.
Portfolio check: Not Boring Capital is NOT on Cowboy Space's cap table (Index lead; IVP, Blossom, SAIC, Breakthrough Energy, a16z, NEA, Interlagos, Construct, Baiju himself). Packy also explicitly notes "I've never met" Baiju, which functions as a soft disclosure. Treat this as commentary, not portfolio promotion.
The core argument
Packy treats Cowboy Space's rollout as a live case study in his Great Differentiation thesis - the idea that as more companies look and sound the same, the ones that win attention are the ones willing to be conspicuously weird in a way that's coherent with the product. Two pieces of evidence: (1) the polished brand video (tumbleweed, cowboy-adjacent music, foldable solar-DC upper stage framed as "the High Frontier") is striking but conventional-good; (2) a second video where Baiju just talks into the camera while slapping cowboy hats on his team is genuinely odd, and that oddness is what makes the rebrand stick. Packy's read: you can't tell if Baiju is performing a bit or being himself, and that ambiguity is the differentiation. Combined with the actual product being a moonshot (orbital DCs powered by solar, on a launch vehicle they're building themselves), the weirdness reads as conviction rather than marketing. He frames the whole move as "Choose Good Quests" - turning Robinhood liquidity into sci-fi infrastructure is the correct shape for a billionaire to take.
(Note: the email body cut off mid-sentence at the cowboy-hat scene - full piece is at the source URL. Captured argument is from the delivered portion plus context from the public Cowboy Space announcement.)
Mapping against Ray Data Co
Two clean pulls:
Innermost Loop confirmation, not new signal. Cowboy Space slots directly into the orbital-real-estate / space-DC layer we're already tracking (see [[2026-05-08-innermost-loop-singularity-orbital-real-estate]] and [[2026-05-12-diamandis-innermost-loop-ai-infrastructure-thesis]]). At $2B valuation with Index leading and a16z+NEA+Breakthrough following, this is now a credible private-market datapoint that the orbital-DC thesis isn't fringe. Worth adding to the investing-candidate watchlist alongside Reflect Orbital and the other DC-in-space plays. Not actionable as a public-market position (private), but a useful pin for the thesis.
Differentiation pattern for RDCO surfaces. The "weird-on-purpose + product conviction" pairing maps onto the founder's existing design-taste lean (hand-drawn, engraving, glitch, Memphis - the [[feedback_design_taste_high_personality]] rule). Cowboy Space's second video is Packy giving us permission to keep pushing the high-personality direction on Sanity Check, raydata.co, and the Ray mascot work. The version of differentiation that works is the one where the weirdness is coherent with what's actually being built - which for RDCO is "solo founder running multiple bets through an always-on agent," and the visual language should reflect that, not sand it down. Concrete: when /sanity-check-design or /ray-data-co-design proposes a tame-but-safe variant, default to the higher-personality cut.
⚠️ Portfolio-disclosure note
Not a paid sponsorship and Packy's disclosure ("I've never met" Baiju) reads honest. No Not Boring Capital position found in public investor lists. Flagging only because per the Not Boring gotchas SOP, his angel positions aren't always disclosed - if a future piece on Cowboy Space appears without similar disclaimers, re-check.
