Why this is in the vault

Thompson’s frame — that the shift from training to inference to agents privileges AWS’s commodity-cost-structure bet (Trainium + Graviton) over Nvidia’s premium-margin moat — is the cleanest articulation yet of the agentic-era infrastructure thesis and directly informs RDCO’s read on the AI-deployment stack.

The core argument

Amazon Q1 2026: revenue +17% to $181.5B, AWS +28% (fastest since 2022), Trainium revenue run-rate “would be $50B” if standalone — top-3 data-center chip business globally. $225B in Trainium commitments (Anthropic, OpenAI, Uber). Trainium2 sold out, Trainium3 nearly fully subscribed, Trainium4 (18 months out) substantially reserved.

Thompson’s load-bearing framework: there are two ways to build durable profit — (1) the Apple model of sustainable differentiation that justifies a premium (the moats-and-network-effects obsession of startups), or (2) the commodity model of sustainably superior cost structure, where the market-clearing price is set by the worst-cost supplier and everyone with cheaper costs earns commensurate profit. Why agentic specifically: training stresses GPUs and high-bandwidth networking (where AWS is weaker); inference and agents stress CPUs (Graviton’s strength), tool-use, and proximity to data/applications already on AWS. Strong reinforcement of the agent-deployer thesis. RDCO has been building toward the position that the value capture in the agentic era flows to whoever owns the data + tool surface where agents actually execute work, not to model labs. Thompson’s “AI growth pulls core workloads in too” point is the same observation from the cloud-economics side: when agents do real enterprise work, they need data + tools nearby, which means the existing data gravity wins. This is exactly the wedge MAC was designed to exploit at the SMB layer — agent deployment is data-engineering work, and whoever already owns the warehouse is the obvious deployer.
