Why a round-2 discovery
Round 1 (2026-04-12) covered messages received through 2026-04-12 and produced 23 filed assessment notes (12 standalone articles + 11 MMA chapters). Round 2 covers messages that arrived in the 18 days since.
Sender-specific gotchas
Series structure
Joe Reis is serializing his book Mixed Model Arts (MMA, Book 1). Round 1 captured Ch 1-13. Since then:
- Ch 14 appears to be skipped or unsent. Inbox jumps from Ch 13 (2026-04-12 “Seeing the Business”) directly to Ch 15 (2026-04-20 “People and Organizations”). No Ch 14 message in
from:practicaldatamodeling@substack.com. Either Joe renumbered, sent it through a different channel, or skipped publishing it. - Ch 15 (2026-04-20) and Ch 16 (2026-04-25) were both filed in round 1’s tail (already in vault).
Pulse-survey cadence
Joe runs a recurring “State of Data Modeling” pulse survey. April 2026 edition:
- 2026-04-14 — survey results published (substantive, file as thought-leadership)
- 2026-04-22 — reminder/last-call to take it (thin CTA, skip per Step 2.5)
This is a new format pattern not seen in round 1. Watch for monthly recurrence.
Substack admin/billing sequence
Founder’s paid subscription lapsed 2026-04-24. Substack sent a 3-email expiry sequence over 6 days (4-18, 4-23, 4-24). All three came through the practicaldatamodeling@substack.com sender address (not a generic Substack admin address), so they show up in the search. All three are Step 2.5 admin skips.
Action item for the founder (DECISION): the paid subscription has lapsed. PDM is a K-tier sender; we want continued access. Should I queue a Notion task to resubscribe, or is the lapse intentional? — surfaced separately as DECISION in the report-back.
No sponsor relationships observed
Round 1 showed PDM as a clean thought-leadership newsletter with no sponsor blocks, no self-consulting CTAs (Joe sells his book directly but as the publication’s own product, not as a sponsor insert), and no curation cross-promo. Round 2 confirms: no new sponsor pattern detected in the 5 unprocessed messages.

Round-1 + round-2 totals
- Substantive articles filed: 23 (round 1)
- Substantive articles pending: ~1 (the April pulse survey results — items 2-5 expected to be Step 2.5 skips)
- Subscriber chat threads (skip): 4
- Total inbox messages: 32
Mapping against Ray Data Co
This is a meta/ops doc, not a content note — its RDCO value is operational rather than analytical. Concretely:
- Sender-tier maintenance. PDM is K-tier (top) per the newsletter whitelist; round-2 confirms Joe Reis is still serializing MMA chapter-by-chapter, still drops a substantive monthly pulse-survey post, and still has zero sponsor entanglement — keeps PDM in the “trust the source, file every substantive issue” bucket.
- Format pattern detected. Recurring “State of Data Modeling” pulse survey is a new newsletter_format =
survey-resultsworth flagging in the process-newsletter taxonomy if more sources adopt it. - Process-newsletter discipline. The Step 2.5 admin/billing skip rule held — 4 of 5 unprocessed messages were sub-cancellation emails caught correctly by the skip filter. Validates the rule.
- Decision surface. Founder-paid PDM subscription lapsed 2026-04-24; resubscribe-vs-stay-lapsed is the actionable decision exiting this discovery (queued to founder, not to the autonomous loop).
