Why this is in the vault

Core argument

  1. Custom agents in production are the single biggest 2026 differentiator — top 1% threshold. Single-agent users (those running raw Claude Code sessions) are ahead of the majority but custom agents in production systems are the top 1%. ROI: scaled, repeatable, domain-specific work. Risk: steep learning curve.
  2. Deprecate old engineering skills deliberately. The pencil metaphor — both creation and deletion are required. Skill atrophy is GUARANTEED in 2026 for any skill that an agent now does. The bet is that the new skill (orchestrating agents) compounds faster than the old skill (typing line-by-line) atrophies.
  3. The two constraints of agentic coding are PLANNING and REVIEWING. Building has been solved. Planning still requires human knowledge of the codebase. Reviewing still requires human attention to validate output. ADWs (AI Developer Workflows) — pipelines of agents combining old-world engineering with new-world agents — are the lever to break both constraints. Estimated 1-2 order-of-magnitude improvement waiting on the other side.
  4. Multi-agent UIs and interaction interfaces — voice specifically — are the laziness escape hatch from the chat interface. Chat is the laziest, most overused agent interface. Voice raises the information rate between human and agent. Multi-agent UIs are NOT another Claude Code wrapper — they are use-case-specific interfaces that show many agents working on the user’s actual product.
  5. Compute-maxing is the discipline of always asking “how can I use more compute today?” Always-on 24/7 agents are the destination. The progression is gradual — you don’t jump from prompting back-and-forth to a 24-hour agent. You incrementally expand. Side bet: compute cost will continue to decline (Qwen series cited as small + smart).
  6. The synthesis: build living software that works for you while you sleep. The five bets compose into one outcome — agents that initiate work, prompt the human at decision points, and operate while the human is offline. ChatGPT Pulse cited as evidence the two-way prompt prediction is coming true.
  7. You are the bottleneck — not the models, not the tools, not the agents. “It’s a skill issue.” The new engineering role is composing the old world of software engineering with the new world of agents to achieve exponential scales. Dan brands this as “agentic engineer.”
  8. First compute crunch prediction: 2026. As more engineers scale their compute usage, supply will become limited. Already starting to see signs. Engineers who internalize compute-maxing early will be advantaged when the crunch hits.
