Sharing Data Insights — A Practical Playbook
The Netlify Data Team's approach to proactively sharing data insights to build engagement, visibility, and data literacy across the organization.
The practice
- Carve out a few hours each week to dig around in the data and surface proactive insights
- Dedicated Slack channel (#internal-stats-n-graphs)
- Each analyst/analytics engineer develops one insight weekly
- Schedule posts so 1-2 insights go out daily Monday through Thursday
The insight format (5 questions)
- "What am I looking at?" — short, informative title setting context
- "What should I learn from this?" — bullet points with key takeaways, bold the key numbers
- "What caught my eye?" — a chart or visualization that draws people in
- "What if I want to know more?" — link to a dashboard or doc with code and methodology
- "What if I have a question?" — explicit invitation for questions and responses
Why it works
Proactively sharing data insights encourages engagement and collaboration, brings visibility to the data team, increases [[data literacy]], and creates opportunities for deeper business understanding. The feedback loop — colleagues surface things they know that you don't — informs future explorations and makes connections across functions.
Connects to [[data team operations]], [[internal journalism]], [[analytics craft]].
