⤴ 2026-07-22 UPDATE — MSN pivot (Taylon coordination)
Data captured: Google Flights + Maps live pulls, 2026-07-22 ~2:27–2:31 PM ET. Prices move; re-pull at booking.
Taylon (phData, client-side) chose MSN (Madison) and asked Ben to book MSN too so they can drive together. That coordination reframes the pick — below is the honest comparison.
| MSN (Madison) | MSP (incumbent, nonstop) | |
|---|---|---|
| Cheapest changeable RT | $685 (United, 1-stop via ORD) | $747 (Delta nonstop; ↑$50 vs 7/21's $697) |
| Nonstop? | No — 1-stop ORD (also AA via CLT/DFW, DL via ATL/DTW) | Yes, Delta both ways |
| Out Tue Aug 4 | TPA 7:50a → ORD → MSN 11:49a (⚠ 35-min ORD layover — tight) | TPA 3:15p → MSP 5:36p nonstop (or 7:45a nonstop, same fare) |
| Back Fri Aug 7 | MSN 8:10a → ORD → TPA 3:12p | MSP 7:05a → TPA 11:16a nonstop |
| Gate-to-gate one-way | ~5–6h (connection) | ~3h20m |
| Drive to La Crosse | 136 mi / ~2h05m I-90W | 150 mi / ~2h22m I-90E |
Verdict (Ben-only view): MSN is NOT "significantly cheaper" on a like-for-like changeable fare (~$62 / 8% less) and the drive is only ~17 min shorter; its real cost is +~4.5h round-trip travel + O'Hare misconnect risk. In isolation MSP's nonstop wins. BUT with the team on MSN + one shared rental + landing together, coordination outweighs the nonstop — book MSN.
⤴ ~2:40 PM ET — THREE-PARTY REFRAME (founder screenshot of Taylon's Slack + new facts): trip is 3 travelers converging on La Crosse, $10k travel budget (generous → cost is not the binding constraint; coordination is). Origins: Ben = TPA · Taylon = SLC (Salt Lake City) · Paulo = São Paulo (GRU). Taylon (via Slack, deferring the call to Ben): "MSP is $500 more for Paulo and for me they went up by $600… if MSP is better we can just do that. What would you rather do MSP or MSN?" → so the group economics flip toward MSN: MSN is cheaper for all three (~$1,150 total: Ben ~$60 + Taylon $600 + Paulo $500), though the $10k budget makes that secondary.
- The real coordination insight: all three route through O'Hare on the MSN path (Ben TPA→ORD, Paulo GRU→ORD, Taylon SLC→ORD) → they can all book the same early-afternoon ORD→MSN final hop and land together, one shared drive. MSP is WORSE for "land together": Ben's TPA nonstop, Taylon's SLC nonstop, and Paulo's connection all arrive at scattered times. So MSN wins on both cost AND the founder's stated goal.
- Recommendation given (2:40pm): GO MSN; all three sync onto one ORD→MSN flight. Ben's leg TPA 7:50a→ORD→MSN ~11:49a; Taylon + Paulo target that same ORD→MSN hop; everyone build a 60–90-min ORD layover; $10k budget → all book CHANGEABLE fares (free rebook on misconnect). Return Fri MSN 8:10a→ORD→TPA. AWAITING Taylon's + Paulo's rough departure windows → then pin the exact shared ORD→MSN flight + target arrival time. Each traveler books their own (no purchase tool + human-gated).
Booking note: avoid the $551 Basic (no bag/no changes). Hotel plan (Hampton Inn Downtown, below) unchanged — same La Crosse destination.

Recommendation — book this
Delta nonstop TPA↔MSP, Main Classic $697 RT (Main Basic $607 fails policy — "ticket changes for a fee"; Classic = free changes; Main Extra refundable $797).
- Out: Tue Aug 4 — DL2301, 3:15 PM → 5:36 PM (3h21m nonstop). Pick up rental, drive I-35S→I-90E ~152 mi / ~2h30m, in La Crosse ~9 PM.
- Return A (onsite ends early-afternoon Thu): Thu Aug 6 — DL2385, 6:10 PM → 10:21 PM. Requires leaving La Crosse ~2 PM. Hotel: 2 nights La Crosse.
- Return B (full Thu): Fri Aug 7 — 12:45 PM → 4:58 PM (7:05 AM and 6:10 PM also exist, same price). Hotel: 3rd night. Same $607/$697 either return day.
- Rental + fuel per prior doc: ~$165–280.
Backup morning-of option (not recommended): Wed Aug 5 DL 7:45 AM → 10:02 AM + drive = La Crosse ~1 PM — misses Wednesday morning. Fly Tuesday.
Thu-evening Delta nonstops MSP→TPA seen: 7:05 AM / 12:45 PM / 6:10 PM — 6:10 PM is the only after-work one; if it's missed, next nonstop is Friday. Return B removes that pressure.
LSE-direct alternative
Still American-only via ORD (Envoy/American Eagle), confirmed live: best 1-stops $1,053 RT (6:44 AM → 11:31 AM Tue) or $1,079 (6:25 PM → 11:59 PM); 2-stops from $1,011. Prices are at the top of the July 10 $500–1,100 estimate, before Main Cabin uplift. Risk unchanged: 2–3 ORD→LSE flights/day, one carrier — an O'Hare summer delay can strand overnight. If chosen anyway: the 6:44 AM with earliest connection.
RST middle option — eliminated
$672–847 RT, all connections (Delta 2-stop ATL/DTW+MSP; AA 1–2 stop via ORD; best 1-stop $790 arriving 12:22 AM). Costs ≥ MSP Main Classic, longer travel, adds misconnect risk. Drops out.
Changed vs July 10 doc
- Onsite dates shifted Aug 3–4 → Aug 5–6; trip shape now Tue Aug 4 out, Thu/Fri back.
- Delta nonstop base rose: $527 (Jul 13 pull, Aug 2–5 window) → $607 Basic / $697 Main Classic. Book soon.
- Delta fare names now Main Basic/Classic/Extra; policy-compliant tier is Main Classic, +$90 over the headline price.
- LSE quote now live (was estimate): ~$1,050+ — confirms the framework's "expect the upper half."
- RST now quoted (was unquoted): eliminated on price + connections.

Hotels (Aug 4–7, 3 nights)
Data captured: Google Hotels + Google Maps live pulls, 2026-07-21 4:37–4:41 PM ET · Dates set Tue Aug 4 → Fri Aug 7 (3 nights) · Rates = Google headline nightly, before taxes/fees · HQ = Kwik Trip support center, 1626 Oak St, La Crosse (public address)
Recommendation — Hampton Inn & Suites La Crosse Downtown (Hilton)
Best-reviewed downtown property, mainstream chain + Hilton Honors, free breakfast/parking/indoor pool, and the evening problem solves itself: walkable downtown dining from the front door.
| # | Hotel | Brand family | Nightly | 3-night pre-tax | Drive to HQ | Downtown dining | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hampton Inn & Suites La Crosse Downtown (511 3rd St N) | Hilton | $147 | ~$441 | 4.8 mi / 12 min | walkable (downtown core) | 4.7 (1.1K) |
| 2 | Courtyard La Crosse Downtown/Mississippi Riverfront (500 Front St S) | Marriott | $193 (OTAs $203; marriott.com $230 king-river-view) | ~$579 | 5.5 mi / 15 min | walkable, riverfront | 4.4 (556) |
| 3 | Holiday Inn Express & Suites Onalaska–La Crosse (2614 Midwest Dr, Onalaska) | IHG | $136 | ~$408 | 4.6 mi / 12 min | ~6 mi drive (Onalaska strip nearby) | 4.3 (668) |
| 4 | Radisson Hotel La Crosse (200 Harborview Plaza) | Radisson (→ Choice Privileges) | $124 | ~$372 | 5.2 mi / 14 min | walkable, riverfront full-service | 4.3 (1.7K) |
Decision logic:
- Hilton points → Hampton (#1). $46/night under the Courtyard, higher rating, breakfast included. Clear default.
- Marriott/Bonvoy loyalty → Courtyard (#2). Only Marriott property in the metro; nicest building (riverfront), but priciest and breakfast costs extra. Note marriott.com sponsored rate showed $230 vs $193–203 headline/OTA — check the Bonvoy member rate before booking.
- IHG points → HIE Onalaska (#3). Same 12-min drive to HQ as downtown (HQ sits north side, roughly between), but evenings are chain-restaurant strip, not downtown.
- No loyalty preference, save $ → Radisson (#4). Cheapest solid full-service, most-reviewed hotel in town, downtown riverfront. Loyalty value weak post-Choice merger.
Across the river — checked, not worth it
Best Western Plus LaCrescent/LaCrosse (MN): $105/night, 4.5 (307), but 8.0 mi / 13 min to HQ. Saves only ~$19/night vs the Radisson for a bridge commute and zero walkability. Skip.
Also seen (context): Hampton Inn La Crosse/Onalaska $287 sponsored (ignore — Onalaska sister property at an official-site rate), Stoney Creek Onalaska $91/4.4, GrandStay $95/4.2, Gundersen Hotel & Suites $107/4.5 (hospital campus), sub-$90 economy tier (Baymont/Super 8/Microtel/Quality Inn) not phData-appropriate.
Est. all-in at Hampton: ~$441 + ~15% room/sales tax ≈ $505 total.
