Prepared: July 10, 2026 · Traveler: Ben Wilson (TPA) · Onsite: Mon Aug 3 – Tue Aug 4, La Crosse, WI Trip shape researched: arrive Sun Aug 2 · return Tue Aug 4 evening OR Wed Aug 5 morning Policy constraints applied: major airlines only (no budget carriers) · economy above Basic · free changes or fully refundable, whichever is less
All prices are estimates as of July 10 and will move — the structural findings (who flies where) are the stable part. Live quotes should be pulled at booking time; links below.
The finding that frames everything
La Crosse (LSE) is a one-airline airport for these dates.
- American (via Chicago O'Hare) is the ONLY major serving LSE in early August — 2–3 regional flights/day.
- United's planned LSE service was delayed by O'Hare capacity restrictions and now starts Oct 25, 2026 — not bookable for this trip.
- Delta discontinued LSE–MSP in June 2023 and has not returned (talks reported, no relaunch date).
So "fly into La Crosse" means: TPA→ORD→LSE on American, no alternatives — with a real misconnect risk (see Option A).
Option A — Fly TPA → LSE (American via O'Hare)
| Itinerary | TPA→ORD (AA mainline, multiple daily) + ORD→LSE (American Eagle, 2–3/day, ~1h30m) |
| Total travel time | ~5h15m gate-to-gate when the connection is tight |
| Policy-compliant fare | AA Main Cabin (standard domestic Main Cabin has no change fees — satisfies "free changes" without paying for refundable) |
| Price estimate (RT) | ~$500–$1,100 — single-carrier last-mile with no competition, booked ~3 weeks out; expect the upper half. Estimate, not a live quote. |
| Risk to flag | With only 2–3 ORD→LSE flights/day, a delayed TPA→ORD leg (O'Hare summer thunderstorms) can mean no same-day backup into LSE → overnight in Chicago, jeopardizing the Mon Aug 3 start. If booking this option, take the earliest connection of the day, not the last. |

Option B — Fly TPA → MSP (Delta nonstop) + rental car
| Itinerary | Delta nonstop TPA↔MSP, 5–6x/day each way, ~3h20m — Delta is effectively the only major that makes this option work (American and United are connection-only on this pair, adding ~5+ hours) |
| Policy-compliant fare | Delta Main Cabin (no change fees on standard domestic Main) — note the cheap aggregator teasers on this route are Basic Economy, which policy excludes |
| Price estimate (RT) | ~$300–$600 Main Cabin. Estimate, not a live quote. |
| Excluded by policy | Sun Country flies TPA→MSP nonstop cheaply — budget carrier, not bookable under phData policy. Noted only so the cheap fares in search results aren't confusing. |
| Drive | MSP → La Crosse: ~152 mi, ~2h30m, I-35 S → I-90 E via Rochester and Winona (not I-94) |
| Rental (3 days, midsize, major agencies at MSP) | ~$130–$240 before taxes/airport fees (Hertz/Enterprise/National listing rates) |
| Fuel | ~304 mi round trip ≈ $32–$40 at current MN prices |
| Resilience | 5–6 nonstops/day = same-day recovery if anything delays; the drive is a controllable quantity with no second flight to miss |

Option C (FYI) — Fly TPA → Rochester, MN (RST) + short drive
Worth a live-pricing look before deciding: RST is served daily by Delta (via MSP) and American (via ORD) — and the drive to La Crosse is only ~76 mi / ~1h20m (half of MSP's). It combines mainline-network reliability with a much shorter drive. No fare signal pulled yet for TPA→RST; one Google Flights check answers it: TPA→RST.
Side-by-side (estimates)
| A: LSE direct | B: MSP + drive | C: RST + drive (FYI) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flight (RT, Main Cabin est.) | $500–1,100 | $300–600 | unquoted — check |
| Rental + fuel (3 days) | — | ~$165–280 | ~$150–260 |
| Door-to-door each way | ~5h15m + no drive | ~3h20m + 2h30m drive | ~5h (connect) + 1h20m drive |
| Schedule resilience | Low (2–3/day, one carrier) | High (5–6 nonstops/day) | Medium |
| Rough total | $500–1,100 | $465–880 | check fares |
Read on it
- Option B (Delta nonstop to MSP + drive) is the most resilient and likely cheapest policy-compliant choice — and if two people are traveling, one rental car splits across both, widening its cost edge.
- Option C (RST) could beat both if fares are reasonable — same reliability logic as B with half the drive. One quote answers it.
- Option A (LSE) buys zero drive time at the cost of price, schedule fragility, and a genuine miss-the-Monday risk. If chosen anyway: earliest ORD connection, never the day's last.
Fare-rule note for booking: on AA/Delta/United, standard Main Cabin (non-Basic) domestic fares carry no change fees — that satisfies the "free changes" requirement at lower cost than fully-refundable fares.
Live price pull — 2026-07-13 ~3:15pm ET (Google Flights, for Taylon's pricing packages)
Context: Taylon building budget packages — possibly TWO trips, possibly Paulo joining. TPA→MSP RT, 1 adult, economy.
Window 1 (out Sun 8/2, back Wed 8/5 — the Aug 3-4 onsite): Delta nonstop $527 (5 daily nonstops ~3h20m: 7:45a/12:31p/3:18p/6:37p/9:00p outbound) · American 1-stop CLT $537 · Southwest 1-stop $349 · Frontier $250 + Sun Country (excluded — budget carriers). Google price insights: "Prices are currently high" for this window → book early.
Window 2 (sampled 8/17–8/20 as second-trip proxy): Delta nonstop $297–337, insights "typical" — the early-Aug premium is the window, not the route.
Budget numbers sent to founder (flights only, w/ margin): Trip 1 $600/pp · Trip 2 $400/pp → $1,000/pp both trips; Ben+Paulo both trips ≈ $2,000 flights total. Caveats: TPA-origin pricing (Paulo's origin may differ); excludes MSP→LSE rental (~2.5h drive) + hotel per trip. LSE-direct remains AA-only ~$500–1,100 w/ misconnect risk — MSP+drive still the rec.
