Cost side: Andrew's Alteryx Ace experience (call 2026-09-29)
Source: Ben's own summary of the call with Andrew, sent over iMessage at 18:03 ET on 2026-09-29. This is secondhand and paraphrased.
Andrew's four points
- Worth it, but he wouldn't do it again at this stage of life. With a young family, it's a lot of extra work to take on.
- Career ceiling. It makes you a highly sought-after individual contributor (IC) and may get you into management. It won't carry you to Director or VP.
- Sales and talent pull. It gets you pulled into sales deals and helps attract talent. Compensation tied to the sales you influence is not guaranteed.
- Vendor risk. Alteryx is fading, Hadoop is gone, and Snowflake has no guaranteed staying power.
He was more encouraging about Anthropic: it's a young company, and getting in early can be a big accelerator. He also said outcomes vary widely. Some recipients stay happily in their roles for years. Others turn it into their own business, as Stephen Few did, going from Tableau Zen Master to his own consulting, education and speaking business.
Ben's position after the call (same message thread, 18:03 and 18:22 ET)
- He wants to be "the guy at the intersection of AI and Snowflake," not a query-engine optimization specialist.
- He is hesitant to go deeper as an IC if that closes off higher-level roles.
- His frame (after Nathan Berry's presale-target email): do what he wants to do; if the byproduct earns recognition, great. The badge is not the goal.
Ray's read (inference, for weighing)
- Evidence from this folder's batch 1 (n=10): 6 of 10 heroes had no visible Summit or BUILD talk, and steady writing was often enough. That cuts against point 1's "huge extra work" framing when the writing is already planned.
- An "AI agents in production" framing hedges point 4. The skill carries over if the vendor fades.
Follow-up conversation, 2026-09-30 (founder relay, iMessage 21:37 ET)
- Getting a current employer to recognize the badge with pay is hard: ~10% bump at best.
- Inflated expectations: sales reps introduce you as "no one better"; if you have to look up an answer, the client is disillusioned. "Sounds like a slog."
- Founder's conclusion: focus on controllable target goals and let the recognition fall out rather than chasing it explicitly. Also considering putting side bets first and talking about them online, ahead of community contribution.
