Printables inspiration research (pre-v2)
Founder asked whether v1 was research-backed. It wasn't — this closes that gap before v2. WebSearch-sourced; no page was fetched and read raw beyond one OT Toolbox check.
1. How the strong sites organize catalogs
- Twinkl: organizes by age band first (e.g. "Early Childhood 0-3", "Prekindergarten"), then by subject/skill category within the band (math, sorting & classification, bulletin boards/classroom mgmt). Age band is the top-level axis, activity type is second-level. Twinkl Early Childhood 0-3
- Education.com: organizes by grade level (Preschool, Kindergarten...) crossed with skill category (e.g. "Sorting and Categorizing", handwriting, number recognition, color tracing). Grade x skill is a two-axis grid, same pattern as Twinkl. Education.com Preschool Worksheets
- 123 Homeschool 4 Me: organizes by pack/bundle rather than single-sheet taxonomy — a themed unit (e.g. a monthly "Play Pack") bundles literacy + math + science + art + sensory-play activities together with a supply list. This is the "template x theme" bundling pattern, not a flat category grid. Preschool Packs
- Judgment: our v1 README already independently converged on the same two-axis pattern (age_grade x activity_types, plus interests/holiday/skills as secondary tags). That's validated by Twinkl/Education.com's structure, not something to redesign. No new axis is needed for v2; the axes are already right, the missing piece is developmental sequencing at the "3-4" band, addressed below.
2. What preschool teachers actually use with 3s, and why
Pre-writing strokes come before letters. This is the single most load-bearing finding.
- Handwriting Without Tears developmental order: vertical line, horizontal line, circle, cross, square, diagonal-right, diagonal-left, X, triangle — straight/circular before diagonal, because diagonals are the hardest motor pattern for 3-4 year olds. OT Toolbox — HWT letter order
- Concrete age benchmarks (OT sources, not marketing): vertical line — imitates at 2, copies/masters at 3; horizontal line — imitates at 2.5, masters at 3; circle — imitates at 2.5, masters at 3; cross shape — 3.5-4; square — 4; diagonal lines — 4.5; X and triangle — 5. Growing Hands-On Kids — pre-writing basics
- Imitation precedes copying developmentally — a 3-year-old copying a demonstrated stroke is more realistic than independently reproducing a letter from a printed model. Same source as above.
- OT Toolbox is explicit that letters should NOT be the starting point: premature letter-writing produces "immature grasp," inability to form diagonal lines, and weak foundational skills; pre-writing lines should precede letter work. OT Toolbox — preschool pre-writing skills (fetched directly, not just search snippet)
Implication for our v2, stated directly: our v1 "letter tracing" page is a half-step early for a just-turned/mid-3-year-old. At age 3 a child is mastering vertical/horizontal lines and circles, not yet reliably at cross-shapes (3.5-4) let alone full letterforms (which combine multiple stroke types, several beyond age-3 mastery e.g. diagonals in K, X, Y, Z). This isn't "drop letter tracing" — it's "add a pre-writing-strokes page and sequence it before the ABC page," and keep letter tracing limited to straight-line-dominant letters (L, T, I, H, F, E) rather than diagonal-heavy ones.
Scissor skills: a 3-year-old is developmentally expected to cut within 1/2 inch of a straight line for the full length independently; by 3-3.5 they cut on-line and begin turning the paper with the other hand. ABC Pediatric Therapy — scissor skills by age — supports adding a simple straight-line cutting-strip page to v2, not yet curve-cutting (that's a 4+ skill).
Daily-practice framing from teachers: rotate fine-motor activities, 10-15 min sessions are enough; lacing beads/cards, pegboards, playdough with tools (rolling pins, cookie cutters, tweezers for pinching objects out) are named as classroom staples. Bridging Child Development — fine motor for 3yo class; Pre-K Pages — fine motor activities
Lacing at 3: a 3-year-old can typically push string through holes but not yet fully thread in-and-out — meaning a v2 lacing-card printable should be judged as "hole-punch + push" difficulty, not intricate over-under threading. Wonjo Kids — threading/lacing for preschoolers
3. Activity-type menu, ranked by fit for a 3-year-old (1-line why each)
- Pre-writing stroke practice (line, circle, cross traced big and thick) — direct OT-sequenced precursor to all handwriting; should sit BEFORE letter tracing in the pack order
- Straight-line cutting strips — matches the 3yo scissor-skill benchmark (cut within 1/2" of a straight line) without demanding curve control
- Size sorting (big/small/bigger) — concrete comparative vocabulary task, no fine motor gate, high 3yo success rate
- Matching (2-piece pairs) — v1 already has this; keep, it's developmentally solid and flexible across themes
- Simple mazes (wide path, few turns) — v1 already has this; keep but keep paths generously wide for immature pencil control
- Dot-to-dot / connect-the-dots (low count, 1-5 dots) — v1 already has this; cap dot count low, high counts are a 4-5yo skill
- Shape tracing (circle, square) — v1 already has this; sequence after pre-writing strokes since circle/square are strokes 3 and 5 in the HWT order
- Coloring (large regions) — v1 already has this; lowest skill floor, good "win" page to end a pack on
- Playdough mats (roll/pinch/press prompts on a themed mat) — builds the hand-strength substrate for everything above; not a "worksheet" per se but a printable prompt card
- Letter tracing (straight-line letters only: L T I H F E) — keep, but restrict letterset and place LAST/near-last in sequence, not early
- I-spy/counting (find and count N items in a scene) — good pre-math, no fine-motor demand, but needs a slightly longer attention span than the above
- Lacing card (hole-punch, push-through) — needs a physical hole-punch step outside the PDF, higher production cost, lower priority for a printable-only v2
4. Proposed v2 set list (7 pages, sequenced by developmental order)
- Pre-writing strokes practice — vertical, horizontal, circle (thick dashed guide, big scale)
- Shape tracing — circle and square only (drop triangle/diamond, those are 4+ per HWT square-then-diagonal order)
- Size sorting — big/small pairs, animal or dinosaur theme to match v1 interests
- Matching — 2-piece pairs, same theme rotation as v1
- Maze — wide path, 1-2 turns max
- Straight-line cutting strip — 2-3 short straight lines to cut and glue/sort
- Letter tracing — straight-line letters only (first initial if it qualifies, else L/T/I), positioned last, not first
This drops nothing from v1's activity_types except re-sequencing letter tracing to the end and narrowing its letterset; it adds pre-writing strokes (new) and a cutting strip (new). Coloring/dot-to-dot can rotate in as an 8th page or swap for a themed variant, both already validated.
5. Seasonal pre-build calendar (US, Florida family, birthday in May)
| Month | Occasion | Build-by |
|---|---|---|
| Sept-Oct | Halloween | early Oct |
| Nov | Thanksgiving | early Nov |
| Dec | Christmas | mid Nov (allow gift-timeline slack) |
| Feb | Valentine's Day | late Jan |
| Mar-Apr | Easter (moves yearly, check date) | 3 weeks prior |
| May | Birthday pack (themed to that year's interest) | mid-April |
No back-to-school pack needed (not applicable at daycare/preschool age 3 the same way); no July 4th flagged unless founder wants it — low priority per US-Florida-family scope given.
