Frontier Round 11 — Part T
Half B of round-11 research slicing: 4 targets — Rev. Joseph Hull's first wife (Colyton, Devon fresh angle via the newly-unlocked Skinner 1928 register transcription), Richard Hull's (ahn 45208) own parents, Eva C. (Brown) Foster's (ahn 15) SC-side parents (SCGenWeb + FindAGrave cemetery-browse execution), and a bibliographic-only preview check of Dawn D. Boyer's 2018 "Family Lineage of Permenter Morgan."
Net effect this half: no new ahnentafel additions, no confidence-tier changes to existing person-links. Two bio/story enrichments qualify for VIZ-CHANGES (Rev. Joseph Hull's curacy window; the unknown-first-wife placeholder's negative-evidence note). Two submitted facts require a mechanical downgrade from CONFIRMED to PROBABLE per the single-FindAGrave/WikiTree rule (neither affects a tree conclusion). Two genuine hard stops (Richard Hull's parents; Eva Brown's parents) remain hard stops, now with fuller source-exhaustion documentation. One bibliographic dead end (Boyer 2018) stays a founder-hands physical/ILL item, unchanged from round 9.
Headlines
- Rev. Joseph Hull's first wife (ahn 11303) still unnamed — but the "unsearched Colyton register" open key is now closed as a genuine, documented negative. A.J.P. Skinner's 1928 transcription of the Colyton, Devon parish registers (previously an "open key" since round 9) is freely full-text-searchable on HathiTrust; direct search of both volumes (1611-1625) finds William Hull's vicar signature continuously (corroborating Joseph's curacy) but zero baptism or marriage entries for "Joseph Hull," and zero "Coffin" surname hits — independently corroborating (not new evidence for, but consistent with) round 10's rejection of "Joanna Coffin." New lead: Crewkerne, Somerset (Joseph's home parish) as the likely marriage venue.
- Curacy window refined: Joseph Hull served as teacher/curate under his brother William, vicar of Colyton, for the five years following his Oxford B.A. (14 Nov 1614) until his institution as rector of Northleigh (14 Apr 1621) — i.e. c.1614/15-1621, a longer window than round 10's "c.1619-1621." Source: Weygant 1919, p.493 (PROBABLE, secondary compiled genealogy, verbatim quote).
- Disambiguation, not a re-opening of the quarantine: William Hull's 1627 will names a niece "Johanna, daughter of his brother Joseph" — this is Joseph's DAUGHTER (Joanna Hull, ahn 5651's own mother-question is unaffected), not the wife. This is very likely the actual origin of the erroneous "Joanna [Coffin]" wife-name conflation in the unreliable Narragansett Historical Register source. Per the standing quarantine, this name is NOT reintroduced as a lead for the wife under any framing.
- Richard Hull (ahn 45208)'s own parents: hard stop confirmed, now fully source-exhausted for free/headless routes. Crewkerne parish register structurally can't reach back that far (starts 1558); Harleian Society Visitations of Somerset and Somerset Medieval Wills (Weaver, 3 vols) both full-text searched with no anchor to Richard; TNA Discovery clean negative. One contaminated lead (mathematical.com's "Hough Hull"/"Agnes Burghton" parent claim) explicitly checked and REJECTED — it contradicts our own confirmed wife-name (Alice, not Johanna Yeard) and death-year facts for Richard Hull.
- Eva C. (Brown) Foster (ahn 15): no CONFIRMED/PROBABLE parents found. One POSSIBLE-tier candidate family — Samuel Brown (1817-1899) + Mary Ann Breazeale Brown (1821-1905), "Brown Family" cemetery near Pumpkintown, Pickens Co SC — surfaced via SCGenWeb cemetery transcription, independently cross-referenced in the Old Pendleton District GEDCOM database (13 children noted but names not yet recovered — file truncation blocked retrieval). Generationally plausible as a grandparent-generation family but has NO anchor tying it to Eva specifically. Stays OFF the tree per standing POSSIBLE-tier rule.
- Perminter Morgan / Boyer 2018 book: bibliographic-only round, no new facts. Confirms the book is real/cataloged (46pp, CreateSpace 2018) but has zero digitized preview anywhere checked (Google Books, Open Library, Amazon Look Inside, archive.org, WorldCat abstract) — remains a founder-hands physical/ILL item, unchanged from round 9's flag. Reamy's St. George's Parish Register p.87 remains the only traceable citation for the James Morgan Sr/Mary Davis (ahn 414/415) parentage claim; no alternate citation surfaced.
- Two mechanical downgrades applied to submitted facts (does not change any tree conclusion): a FindAGrave cemetery-browse listing (Eva Brown target) and a WikiTree+RootsWeb citation-trail confirmation (Perminter Morgan target) were both submitted at CONFIRMED tier resting on a single FindAGrave/WikiTree-class source — both corrected to PROBABLE per the standing downgrade rule before reporting.
VIZ-CHANGES
| ahn | op | field | new value | confidence | rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 11302 | UPDATE_STORY | bio | Refine Rev. Joseph Hull's curacy window from "c.1619-1621" to c.1614/15-1621: "During the five years immediately following [his Oxford B.A., 14 Nov 1614], he studied theology, serving meantime as a teacher and curate under his elder brother William Hull, vicar of Colyton in Devonshire. On Apr. 14, 1621... he was duly instituted rector of Northleigh." | PROBABLE (Weygant, The Hull Family in America, 1919, p.493 — verbatim quote, single secondary-compiled source, archive.org item hullfamilyinamer00weyg) | Longer, better-documented curacy window than round 10's estimate; does not change any confirmed date, purely a bio/story refinement. |
| 11303 | UPDATE_STORY | bio | Add negative-evidence note: direct full-text search of A.J.P. Skinner's 1928 transcription of the Colyton, Devon parish registers (baptisms/burials + marriages, both volumes, 1611-1625 window, HathiTrust) finds NO baptism entry naming a child of "Joseph Hull" and NO marriage entry for "Hull, Joseph & [bride]" anywhere in the register — Joseph's first wife's name and marriage venue remain genuinely unrecovered; new lead redirects to Crewkerne, Somerset (his home parish). Also zero "Coffin" surname hits in the 1615-1625 window, independently corroborating (not new evidence for) the existing "Joanna Coffin" quarantine. | CONFIRMED (primary source: direct full-text search of the digitized parish register itself, https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015014300159 and id=mdp.39015014300001, fetched directly 2026-07-28) | Genuine documented negative for the "search Colyton" open key from round 10; closes that specific lead while opening a new one (Crewkerne). Does not reintroduce "Joanna"/"Joanna Coffin" in any form. |
No ADD_PERSON, UPDATE_DATE, or UPDATE_PARENTS changes from this half this round.
NEW-PEOPLE
None at PROBABLE+ tier from this half of round 11.
- Samuel Brown (b. 25 Apr 1817, d. 4 Sep 1899) and Mary Ann Breazeale Brown (b. 24/27 Jul 1821, d. 6 Jan 1905), Pickens Co SC — POSSIBLE only, no anchor connecting this family to Eva C. (Brown) Foster (ahn 15). Not added; documented here for completeness and as a future-round lead (recover the 13 children's names from the Old Pendleton District GEDCOM database, then cross-reference against Eva's 1900 census household).
ESTIMATES-RETIRED
None from this half this round. No est_birth/est_death values were replaced by real dates for any of the four targets.
CONTRADICTIONS
- No new contradictions with the tree doc. The Colyton register search result is a documented negative that closes an open key without conflicting with anything currently on the tree; it independently corroborates (does not newly evidence) round 10's rejection of "Joanna"/"Joanna Coffin" as Joseph Hull's first wife's name.
- Mechanical downgrade — Eva Brown target, fact 4 (FindAGrave cemetery-browse listing for Pumpkintown, Pickens Co SC): submitted at CONFIRMED, resting on a single FindAGrave page. Per the standing rule ("any single-FindAGrave-or-WikiTree 'CONFIRMED' must be downgraded to PROBABLE"), corrected to PROBABLE. Does not affect any tree conclusion — Eva Brown's parents remain unfound either way.
- Mechanical downgrade — Perminter Morgan/Boyer target, fact 7 (Reamy p.87 citation "continues to surface... via WikiTree Morgan-1173 and a RootsWeb tree"): submitted at CONFIRMED, resting on WikiTree + a RootsWeb tree (both single-compiler/secondary-aggregator sources). Corrected to PROBABLE. Consistent with round 9-10's finding that this is "same compiler, not independent corroboration" territory — reinforces rather than contradicts the existing James Morgan Sr/Mary Davis (ahn 414/415) POSSIBLE tier from round 10's downgrade.
- William Hull's 1627 will is not catalogued at The National Archives (Kew) — a new, mildly useful negative (not a contradiction): it implies the will was very likely proved in a lower diocesan/peculiar court (Consistory Court of Exeter), redirecting any future pursuit of the will's full text to Devon Heritage Centre rather than TNA.
FOUNDER-HANDS
- William Hull's 1627 will (Colyton vicar, Joseph Hull's brother) — Consistory Court of Exeter probate records, likely held at Devon Heritage Centre / South West Heritage Trust (devon-cat.swheritage.org.uk references a "Colyton Parish Registers" holding at 3483A/PR/1). Not at TNA (checked, zero results). In-person-or-paid-lookup item.
- Devon Online Parish Clerk (OPC) Project (volunteer-run, free email-request lookups) — a founder-hands avenue for Colyton/Crewkerne parish-register questions not covered by the digitized Skinner transcription; not automatable headlessly.
- Devon Family History Society's "Colyton Marriages 1538-1837" indexed product (devonfhs.org.uk) — appears to be paid/membership, not free online search; worth a founder-hands check only if the Crewkerne, Somerset lead (Joseph Hull's marriage) also comes up empty.
- Somerset Wills Index (M.T. Medlycott, 1993, archive.org id somersetwillsind0000mtme) — the single most promising uncracked source for Richard Hull's (ahn 45208) own parents; lending-restricted (HTTP 403 to direct fetch and proxy), requires an archive.org account login to borrow.
- Somerset Record Society / Somerset Heritage Centre (DD\SP wills, Archdeaconry of Taunton originals) or Somerset & Dorset Family History Society — free digitized sources for Richard Hull's parentage appear exhausted; this is very likely the correct next-generation step, physical/paid access.
- FamilySearch, Ancestry, Fold3 (login-gated) — not attempted for Richard Hull's parents per headless constraint; remain founder-hands, not exhausted.
- Ancestry.com public trees for "Mary Ann Breazeale" Brown Family Tree — a search snippet suggests at least one public tree exists for the Samuel Brown/Mary Ann Breazeale couple that might list all 13 children's names; login-gated. Lead only — never import a name from an Ancestry public tree as fact per project rules.
- Dawn D. Boyer's 2018 "Family Lineage of Permenter Morgan" (physical copy or ILL) — carried forward unchanged from round 9. The single highest-value check remaining: the book's own sources/bibliography page (title notes it "includes sources") — record verbatim whether it cites Reamy's St. George's Parish Register p.87 directly (non-independent) or something else entirely (genuine independent corroboration).
Per-target detail
1. joseph-hull-colyton-devon-skinner (ahn 11302 / 11303)
Major source unlock: Skinner's 1928 Colyton register transcription (2 vols) is freely full-text searchable on HathiTrust — closes the "never actually searched" gap flagged since round 9. Direct search across 1611-1625: William Hull's vicar signature continuous (corroborates curacy); zero Joseph Hull baptism entries; zero Joseph Hull marriage entries; zero Coffin hits. Curacy window refined to c.1614/15-1621 (Weygant p.493, PROBABLE). Disambiguation: William Hull's 1627 will names niece "Johanna, daughter of his brother Joseph" — the daughter, not the wife; flagged as the likely origin of the erroneous "Joanna Coffin" conflation, explicitly not reintroduced as a wife-name lead. New lead: Crewkerne, Somerset as the likely marriage venue (Colyton itself shows nothing). TNA Discovery: zero results for William Hull's 1627 will, suggesting a diocesan/peculiar-court probate rather than PCC.
2. richard-hull-ahn45208-somerset-parents
Genuinely unchanged hard stop, now fully source-exhausted for free/headless routes: Crewkerne parish register starts 1558 (structurally too late for Richard's own baptism/marriage, est. birth c.1500-1535); Harleian Society Visitations of Somerset (1531/1573 + 1591-pedigrees) full-text searched, only the distinct armigerous Hull-of-Enmore family and the "Hull Episcopi" place-name found, no anchor; Somerset Medieval Wills (Weaver, 3 vols, 1383-1558) full-text searched, only unconnected Hull entries (Katheryn, John, Nicholas, atte-Hull), no Crewkerne tie; TNA Discovery zero results. WikiTree Hull-514 independently states "no record of who his parents were" (POSSIBLE, corroboration only). One contaminated lead (mathematical.com's "Hough Hull"/"Agnes Burghton" parentage claim, sourced only to ancestry.com) explicitly checked and REJECTED: it also gives Richard's wife as "Johanna Yeard" and death year 1587, both contradicting our own confirmed primary-source facts (wife = Alice, d. bef. 6 Jun 1559) — indicates a conflated or fabricated tree; do not adopt even as a POSSIBLE lead without independent primary corroboration. Best remaining lead: Somerset Wills Index (Medlycott 1993), archive.org-lending-blocked (founder-hands).
3. eva-brown-scgenweb-findagrave-cemetery (ahn 15)
No parents found at CONFIRMED/PROBABLE tier. SCGenWeb Pickens Co Tombstone Inscription Project transcription P023 documents a "Brown Family" cemetery near Pumpkintown (Samuel Brown 1817-1899 + wife Mary Ann Breazeale Brown 1821-1905; original fieldstones removed, no in-situ markers) — cemetery record itself CONFIRMED to exist, relation to Eva C. Brown POSSIBLE at best, no anchor. Independently cross-referenced in the Old Pendleton District GEDCOM Database Project (355,948 records, compiled by Herman Geschwind since 1991) with the added detail of 13 children — names not recovered, every fetch attempt (direct + r.jina.ai proxy) silently truncated before the BROWN section. FindAGrave's Pumpkintown cemetery-browse listing (6 cemeteries, no "Brown Family" among them) submitted CONFIRMED — downgraded to PROBABLE per the single-FindAGrave-source rule (see Contradictions #2); this doesn't change the underlying finding that FindAGrave has no presence to cross-reference for this specific cemetery. New leads: recover the 13 children's names (byte-range fetch or mirrored-copy workaround), the Old Pendleton District GEDCOM hub as a systematic future-round crawl target, Ancestry public tree for this couple (founder-hands, lead only), Fairfield Genealogy Society's compiled Samuel Brown FindAGrave PDF (not yet fetched), RootsWeb mailing-list archive migration (not yet located).
4. perminter-morgan-boyer-2018-preview
Bibliographic/methodology-verification round only — no new facts about Perminter Morgan, James Morgan Sr, or Mary Davis. Confirms Boyer's 2018 book (ISBN 9781987738971, 46pp, CreateSpace) is real and cataloged (Open Library, WorldCat) but has zero digitized preview anywhere checked: Google Books (no volume match), Open Library (has_fulltext:false), Amazon Look Inside (scrape-blocked, genuinely unresolved not confirmed-absent), archive.org (zero results), dboyerconsulting.com author site (raw HTML grepped, no bibliography/source mentions). Reamy's St. George's Parish Register p.87 remains the sole traceable citation for the marriage/Perminter-birth claim underlying ahn 414/415's parent-link to Susannah Morgan (ahn 207) — WikiTree/RootsWeb re-surfacing of this same citation submitted CONFIRMED, downgraded to PROBABLE (see Contradictions #3), consistent with round 10's existing POSSIBLE-tier downgrade on that parent-link. Remains a founder-hands physical/ILL item, unchanged from round 9's flag.
