Frontier Round 10 — Part R (Slicer B, 6 targets)

2026-07-27·status: sliced, awaiting implementer

Frontier Round 10 — Part R

Half B of round-10 research slicing: 6 targets — Goodspeed Wingrave register re-check, Eva Brown SC-side alternate route, two Robert-Goodspeed-line verification dispatches (jennings-v-goodspeed-1649, Robert Goodspeed Sr's own father), and two Perminter-Morgan-citation-trail dispatches (James Morgan Sr, Mary Davis).

Net effect this round: no new ahnentafel additions from this half. One confidence downgrade identified (Robert Goodspeed Sr's paternity from Nicholas Goodspeed), one confidence downgrade recommended (James Morgan Sr/Mary Davis Morgan as parents of Susannah Morgan), one long-standing disagreement (Alice Harris / ahn 11297) remains unresolved, one false-merge risk (Jennings v Goodspeed 1649) ruled out, and one dead-end target (Eva Brown SC parents) confirmed structurally dead for now.

Headlines

VIZ-CHANGES

ahn op field new value confidence rationale
11296 UPDATE_STORY bio Add Moriarty's own register caveat: "The entries from 1550 to the end of 1611 in the first volume of these registers are in one handwriting, except for a few entries at the end of the volume, and are evidently copies of the original records." (NEHGR vol.82, pp.445-446) CONFIRMED (verbatim quote of Moriarty's own footnote, read directly from archive.org full text) Strengthens documentation of why the underlying register entries themselves stay PROBABLE, not CONFIRMED — the register the article draws on was already a fair copy, not the original.
11296 UPDATE_STORY bio Add full 1658 will detail: wife Alice; sons Henry, Nicholas, Roger, Bennett, Thomas (£6 13s 4d each to Roger/Bennett/Thomas "if they or any of them return from beyond the seas within ten years after my decease"); daughters Margaret (Bate), Mary (Seabrooke), Jane (Lucas); deceased son Robert whose son (also Robert, under 21) received a grandchild's bequest; son John Goodspeede, residuary legatee/executor, proved the will 13 Feb 1660/1. PROBABLE (Moriarty-compiled verbatim quote of the will text; single-compiler source per standing tree convention) Materially richer will detail than round 9 captured; directly supports the will as basis for Roger Goodspeed's English origin.
22592 UPDATE_STORY bio Add: Robert Goodspeed Sr inherited copyhold land in Wingrave (Eastwellwyk close + 1 virgate Rowsham/Wingrave, ~16s/yr rent) 24 Sept 1558 on Nicholas Goodspeed's death; taxed 10s on £6 goods in the 1559 lay subsidy; served as Wingrave manor-court juror (documented sittings 1560, 1563, 1565-69, 1576, 1580-82); at least 9 children baptized at Wingrave 1553-1583. PROBABLE (Moriarty-compiled, single source) Fleshes out a previously thin bio for ahn 22592.
22592 UPDATE_PARENTS father_confidence (link to ahn 45184, Nicholas Goodspeed) DOWNGRADE from PROBABLE to POSSIBLE POSSIBLE Moriarty's bracketed "[his son]" identifying Robert as Nicholas's son is his own editorial insertion; the primary 1558 manor court-roll text itself only records a copyhold heriot/succession, not a stated father-son relationship. No will, baptism, or other document names Robert as Nicholas's son. This is a documentary-inference gap, not a new contradiction — recommend downgrading the existing PROBABLE link.
207 UPDATE_PARENTS parent_confidence (link to ahn 414 James Morgan Sr / ahn 415 Mary Davis Morgan) DOWNGRADE from PROBABLE to POSSIBLE (recommended, founder/implementer discretion) POSSIBLE Round 9 already flagged this parentage as resting on "a single uncited paragraph duplicated near-verbatim" and flagged it "for a future-round downgrade review." This round's dedicated dispatch (a) confirmed the marriage (1754) and Perminter's birth (1755) citations trace to the identical Reamy p.87 source, not independent records, and (b) surfaced a NEW same-name-conflation risk: 4-5 mutually conflicting reported death years for James Morgan Sr across trees, plus a Rev-War pension (S7251) likely misattributed to him in a Randolph Co. library PDF. This is the "clean downgrade signal" round 9 asked for.

No ADD_PERSON or UPDATE_DATE changes from this half this round.

NEW-PEOPLE

None at PROBABLE+ tier from this half of round 10. (Rev. Perminter Morgan was investigated as a collateral relative — sibling of Susannah Morgan, ahn 207, not a direct ancestor — and every biographical detail about him, dates, spouse Gracie Jones, ministry chronology, traces only to FindAGrave/WikiTree/Geni tree-site paragraphs this round, confidence POSSIBLE. Per project rules, POSSIBLE-tier findings and non-direct-line collaterals do not get an ahn number or a VIZ-CHANGE; documented here for completeness only.)

ESTIMATES-RETIRED

None from this half this round. All dates discussed (Robert Goodspeed's baptism/burial, Robert Sr's marriage/burial, Isabel Allyn's marriage/burial) were already real dates carried over from round 9's Moriarty sourcing, not estimated placeholders.

CONTRADICTIONS

  1. Jennings v Goodspeed 1649 (TNA C 5/405/103) vs. the 1658 Wingrave will — wife-name mismatch. TNA catalog: "Defendants: Robert Goodspeed, Agnes Goodspeed his wife, and another... Subject: property in Stoke Mandeville, Buckinghamshire... Date: 1649." The 1658 will (NEHGR vol.82, p.464): "To my wife Alice all my household stuff in my house at Wingrave..." Agnes ≠ Alice. Resolution applied: do NOT merge the 1649 Chancery defendant with ahn 11296. Flagged as a possible but unproven match to the testator's own deceased son Robert (named in the will as father of a grandson Robert, under 21 in 1658) — a lead, not a fact.

  2. Robert Goodspeed Sr's paternity from Nicholas Goodspeed — inference, not documentary statement. Moriarty's pedigree gloss "[his son]" over the 1558 court-roll heriot/succession entry is editorial, not a quote from the roll itself. Currently on the tree at PROBABLE (round 9); this round's dedicated look at the underlying text finds the primary document doesn't actually say it. Recommend downgrade to POSSIBLE (see VIZ-CHANGES).

  3. James Morgan Sr's (ahn 414) death date — at least 5 conflicting values, unresolved. WikiTree Morgan-1173: "after 23 Feb 1804, probably Rowan County, NC." A Geni profile (id 6000000000729993200) is titled "James Morgan, Sr. (c.1729-1785)" but a search-engine cache of the SAME id/URL shows "James Stephen Morgan (1729-1765)." A web-search snippet reports "died in 1810." A Randolph County NC Library PDF possibly shows "died post 18 Jan 1784 in Randolph Cty" but column extraction was unreliable. Currently on the tree as ed:~1804 ("two conflicting secondary sources; 1804 used as better-supported," per round 7). Logged, NOT adjudicated — matches the tree's existing GW Gibby 1909/1915 precedent. Do not treat 1804 as settled without a primary probate, pension-file, or parish-register verification.

  4. Rev-War pension S7251 "James Morgan" is very likely NOT our ahn 414. The pensioner applied 20 Oct 1834 from Yancey County NC, service 1781-82 — our James Morgan Sr (b. c.1729) would be ~105 years old in 1834. A Randolph Co. library PDF cross-references S7251 near what may be our James Morgan Sr's row. Do not use S7251 to corroborate ahn 414's Rev-War service or DAR record without independent confirmation.

  5. Alice Harris / ahn 11297: round-9 slicer disagreement remains open. No target this round produced evidence that resolves whether Goodspeed 1907's "it has not been learned from what country Roger (1) came... nor of Alice" extends to blocking the English parentage claim (Alice Harris m. Robert Goodspeed 6 Nov 1609 Soulbury, per Phillimore's Bucks Marriages vol.1, as printed in Moriarty's own pedigree) or is narrowly about the couple's American immigration circumstances only. Status unchanged: NOT added to the tree.

FOUNDER-HANDS

Per-target detail

1. goodspeed-wingrave-primary-register (ahn 11296 / 22592 / 22593 / 45184)

Confirmed no independent second source exists for the Wingrave register entries (5th distinct round attempting this). Located and read the complete Moriarty 1928 NEHGR article (archive.org newenglandhistor0000vari). Key verbatim quote (CONFIRMED — Moriarty's own footnote, directly read): "The entries from 1550 to the end of 1611 in the first volume of these registers are in one handwriting, except for a few entries at the end of the volume, and are evidently copies of the original records." (NEHGR vol.82, pp.445-446). Register entries themselves stay PROBABLE (secondary-compiled, no independent second transcription). FreeREG: zero Wingrave coverage (11 Buckinghamshire hits, all Amersham/Chesham/Drayton-Parslow). Visitation of Buckinghamshire 1566: zero Goodspeed/Wingrave mentions (clean negative — yeomen, not gentry). TNA Discovery: only an unrelated 1757 will and the 1649 Chancery suit (see target 3 below) surfaced. All four people stay PROBABLE, unchanged tier, stronger documentation.

2. eva-brown-sc-side-alternate

No parents found. SC has no state civil vital records before 1911/1915 (CONFIRMED via three independent summaries: FamilySearch Wiki, Anderson County Library, SCDAH). Multiple free-search avenues blocked by bot-protection (Chronicling America 403/404 on 4 URL patterns; FindAGrave search endpoint 403; rootsweb ~scoconee DNS failure / 403; usgwarchives.net connection refused) rather than genuine content negatives. New leads: Old Pendleton District SCGS B-surname index (needs correct URL or volunteer email), SCGenWeb county cemetery sub-pages (not yet crawled), FindAGrave cemetery-browse (vs. search) may dodge the bot-block, SCDAH interactive search box (needs Playwright).

3. r2-robert-goodspeed (jennings-v-goodspeed-1649 target)

Confirms the frontier agent's proposed link between the 1658 Wingrave testator and the 1649 Stoke Mandeville Chancery defendant is wrong: wife Alice (will) vs. wife Agnes (Chancery). Independently re-pulled both the TNA catalog description and the NEHGR will text directly (not relying on the frontier agent's paraphrase). Structurally plausible alternate link: the testator's own deceased son Robert (per the will's "grandchild Robert son of Robert deceased" bequest) — flagged as a lead only, not applied.

4. r2-james-morgan-sr- (Perminter Morgan Sr, target labeled by parentName "James Morgan Sr.")

All Perminter biographical detail (b. 29 Aug 1755, ordained 1791, first pastor Mountain Creek then Bethel Baptist, d. 28 Apr 1824, m. Gracie Jones ~1775, ~12 children) traces only to FindAGrave/WikiTree/Geni-type tree paragraphs — POSSIBLE, not added. Main finding: the marriage citation (FamilySearch DGS 7835986, p.372) is a specific, checkable archival citation (PROBABLE) but not viewed (login-gated). James Morgan Sr's own death date is contested 4-5 ways across trees — new conflation-risk flag (see Contradictions #3). S7251 pension mismatch flagged (Contradictions #4).

5. r2-mary-davis

No independent birth/death/burial record for Mary Davis found. Confirmed the marriage (18 Jul 1754) and Perminter's-birth (29 Aug 1755) citations are the SAME Reamy p.87 source cited twice, not two independent records. 12 sources checked (WikiTree, Geni, FindAGrave, MyHeritage, ourfamtree, rootsweb, Boyer 2018 book, Harford Co Historical Society, DAR GRS, Google Books, HathiTrust) all repeat the identical paragraph. Quarantine note: ancestorsinaprons.com's "James Morgan Sr" article is about a completely different man (1607-1685, Roxbury/Connecticut) — a name-collision risk, distinct from the already-quarantined Welsh Morgan-15829.

6. r2-robert-goodspeed-sr-of-wingrave... (Nicholas Goodspeed's paternity of Robert Goodspeed Sr)

Robert Goodspeed Sr's biography enriched (1559 lay subsidy, manor-court juror duty 1560-82, copyhold inheritance 1558, 9 children 1553-1583) — PROBABLE, single Moriarty source. Key finding: the Nicholas-is-father-of-Robert-Sr link is an editorial inference over a copyhold-succession court-roll entry, not a documentary statement — recommend downgrade to POSSIBLE (see VIZ-CHANGES and Contradictions #2). Confirms (via the 1907 Goodspeed genealogy, read in full) that the entire Wingrave pedigree was unknown before Moriarty's 1928 discovery — CONFIRMED verbatim quote: "the foreign origin of Roger and Alice has not been discovered...nothing short of an extended research of the records throughout England will disclose this information." (Weston A. Goodspeed, History of the Goodspeed Family, 1907).
