Round 8 — Part File Summary, Half A
HEADLINES
Thomas Hull the Younger (ahn 22604) parents CONFIRMED. Richard Hull (ahn 45208, d. bef. 6 Jun 1559 Crewkerne) is confirmed as father by his own 1559 Somerset will naming both "Thomas Hull my son the elder" and a second Thomas Hull in a group bequest to three sons — the "elder" qualifier only exists because a younger Thomas also exists. Alice Hull widow (ahn 45209) confirmed as mother via verbatim 1572/3 Crewkerne marriage register: "Thomas Hull the sonne of Alice Hull widdow married with Johane Peson." Both parent links upgrade from PROBABLE to CONFIRMED. Two new nodes added: ahn 45208 (Richard Hull) and ahn 45209 (Alice Hull widow).
Robert Kent Sr. of Halifax County VA (ahn 264) CONFIRMED as father of Alexander Kent (ahn 132). Named explicitly in his own Halifax County will (written Oct. 10, 1782; probated Jul. 17, 1783) as one of the children to share equally in the remainder of the estate, alongside Luke, William, John, Peterfield, Candace Arnold, Mary Posey, and Caty Hendricks. Adds a new confirmed node at ahn 264.
Richard Wilson (ahn 64) placed PROBABLE in 1800 Iredell County NC census. "Wilson, Richard" on page 16 (USGenWebArchives transcription, contributor Timothy Siple) is the only Richard Wilson found across three candidate counties — Burke (14 Wilson HOH, none named Richard, line-by-line confirmed), Buncombe Asheville Town (5 Wilson HOH, none named Richard, confirmed), and Iredell. Consistent with ~1794 Iredell County marriage to Rachel Strain, whose father Andrew Strain Sr. is confirmed as Iredell County resident. No household composition data yet; age bracket unconfirmed.
Rev. Joseph Hull (ahn 11302) task-brief error corrected. The brief states second wife was "Jane" — research CONFIRMS this is wrong. Second wife was Agnes (probable surname Hunt), married 13 March 1633 at St. Cuthbert's Church, Wells, Somerset, confirmed by the 1635 Weymouth primary ship manifest ("Agnes Hull, his wife, aged 25 years"), Weygant 1913, Hull Family Association, and WikiTree. First wife identity (ahn 11303) remains UNKNOWN; "Joanna" (given name only) is POSSIBLE from a single 1882 source contradicted by Robert Charles Anderson (Great Migration). "Joanna Coffin" quarantine maintained.
WikiTree "Providence Book of Probate p.64" citation for Catharine Sayles's parentage (ahn 1409 chain) cannot be verified from any digitized source. John Sayles Sr. had no recorded Providence probate — confirmed absent from the 1646–1899 index; he appears to have died intestate. The Roger Williams descent chain anchor now rests on the 1670 deed primary document, where John Sayles Sr. stated verbatim "which my father-in-law Mr. Roger Williams gave me" — a direct first-person primary source for the Williams-Sayles marriage.
William Alexander Kent (ahn 66) → Alexander Kent (ahn 132) parentage cannot be upgraded from PROBABLE. No primary document names William among Alexander's children. Pension file S38113 names only Alexander Kent Jr. (b. ~1796, Gilmer County GA) as the documented son via a 1853 power of attorney. The PROBABLE rating stands pending Alexander's own will (Halifax County Will Book A-1, 1833–1857).
VIZ-CHANGES
Only PROBABLE+ findings applied. POSSIBLE-tier items documented here only.
Hull line — new confirmed ancestors (ahn 45208, 45209)
ADD_PERSON | 45208 | Richard Hull — b. abt. 1510 Crewkerne, Somerset, England;
d. bef. 6 Jun 1559 Crewkerne, Somerset, England;
CONFIRMED — own will dated 10 Feb 1558/59, proved 6 Jun 1559
(Archdeaconry of Taunton, Somerset probate) names "Thomas Hull
my son the elder" with a separate bequest and names a second
Thomas Hull in the group bequest to three sons James, Thomas,
and John — the elder/younger distinction internally confirms
two sons named Thomas. Wife Alice named co-executrix.
ADD_PERSON | 45209 | Alice Hull (nee unknown) — b. abt. 1525 Crewkerne, Somerset,
England; d. 20 Oct 1587 Crewkerne, Somerset, England;
CONFIRMED — named executrix in Richard Hull's 1559 will and
explicitly as mother in the verbatim 1572/3 Crewkerne marriage
register: "Thomas Hull the sonne of Alice Hull widdow married
with Johane Peson." Specific burial date from Crewkerne parish
burial register (D/P/crew). Maiden name unknown.
UPDATE_PARENTS | 22604 | father -> AHN 45208 (CONFIRMED); mother -> AHN 45209 (CONFIRMED);
upgrade from PROBABLE/PROBABLE to CONFIRMED/CONFIRMED;
add primary source citation to Thomas the Younger's story
Kent line — new confirmed ancestor (ahn 264)
ADD_PERSON | 264 | Robert Kent Sr. — b. abt. 1712 Goochland or Cumberland County,
Virginia; d. 1782–1783 Halifax County, Virginia;
CONFIRMED — Halifax County VA Will Book 1 (1773–1783): will
written Oct 10 1782, probated Jul 17 1783, names wife Mary and
specifies remainder of estate to be equally divided among
children including "Alexander Kent" explicitly. Also noted:
1784 will of Robert Kent Jr. gave "One negro boy named Champ
to Alexander Kent."
UPDATE_PARENTS | 132 | father -> AHN 264 (CONFIRMED); mother -> AHN 265 (POSSIBLE —
wife Mary of Robert Kent Sr.; maiden name unverified; OFF VIZ
pending confirmation)
UPDATE_STORY | 132 | Add Revolutionary War service from NARA pension file S38113:
private in Capt. Hughes Woodson's company, 10th Virginia
Regiment, Col. Edward Stevens commanding; 3 years Continental
line, mustered March 1777, discharged March 1780 Philadelphia;
battles: Brandywine, Germantown, Capture of Stoney Point;
pensioned $8/month from June 28, 1825; in 1823 held 70 acres
valued at $140, farmer; in 1840 Halifax County pensioner census
age 84; documented son Alexander Kent Jr. (b. ~1796, d. 1859,
Gilmer County GA) via 1853 power of attorney;
father confirmed as Robert Kent Sr. (ahn 264) via own 1782 will
Richard Wilson (ahn 64) — census placement
UPDATE_STORY | 64 | 1800 Iredell County NC census (PROBABLE): "Wilson, Richard"
on page 16, USGenWebArchives transcription (contributor Timothy
Siple). Sole Richard Wilson across three candidate counties
(Burke ruled out 14 Wilson HOH none named Richard; Buncombe
Asheville Town ruled out 5 Wilson HOH none named Richard;
Iredell positive). Adjacent entry page 16: "Wilson, James."
No household composition data — age-bracket confirmation
pending. Migration timeline now reads: 1790 Surry/Stokes Co →
~1794–1800 Iredell Co → ~1800–1808 Buncombe/Haywood →
1808+ Haywood Co (son Levi born there) → 1828 Macon Co.
NEGATIVE EVIDENCE: "born in Ireland" alternative confirmed
absent from primary source — 1850 Macon County Mortality
Schedule states Surry County NC birthplace unambiguously.
John Sayles probate (ahn 1409 chain)
UPDATE_STORY | 1409 | John Sayles Sr. probate search (Round 8): NO recorded
Providence probate — confirmed absent from the 1646–1899
Providence probate index; appears to have died intestate
(died before Jan 5, 1702 per deed language "John Sailes of
said Providence now deceased"). Roger Williams descent chain
anchor is the 1670 deed PRIMARY DOCUMENT: John Sayles Sr.
stated verbatim "which my father-in-law Mr. Roger Williams
gave me." WikiTree citation "Providence Book of Probate p.64"
refers to undigitized physical manuscript at Rhode Island
Judicial Records Center — not verifiable from accessible
digital sources. Catharine Sayles's parentage rests on Austin
1887 secondary source.
Rev. Joseph Hull first wife (ahn 11303) — brief correction
UPDATE_STORY | 11303 | Task-brief error corrected (Round 8): brief claim that Joseph
Hull's second wife was "Jane" is INCORRECT. Second wife was
Agnes (probable surname Hunt), married 13 March 1633 at
St. Cuthbert's Church, Wells, Somerset — confirmed by the 1635
Weymouth ship manifest (primary: "Agnes Hull, his wife, aged
25 years"), Weygant 1913 p.247, Hull Family Association, and
WikiTree. Agnes filed his estate inventory December 5, 1665.
First wife identity (this entry) remains UNKNOWN; "Joanna"
as given name POSSIBLE only (single 1882 citation, contradicted
by Robert Charles Anderson Great Migration project). "Joanna
Coffin" quarantine maintained — Joanna Coffin was approximately
3 years old at the supposed marriage date.
NEW PEOPLE (PROBABLE+ only)
| AHN | Name | Birth | Death | Confidence | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 45208 | Richard Hull | abt. 1510, Crewkerne, Somerset, England | bef. 6 Jun 1559, Crewkerne, Somerset, England | CONFIRMED | Own will 10 Feb 1558/59 (proved 6 Jun 1559, Archdeaconry of Taunton) names "Thomas Hull my son the elder" separately and a second Thomas Hull in the group bequest to three sons James, Thomas, and John — the elder/younger distinction internally confirms two sons named Thomas. Wife Alice named co-executrix. |
| 45209 | Alice Hull (nee unknown) | abt. 1525, Crewkerne, Somerset, England | 20 Oct 1587, Crewkerne, Somerset, England | CONFIRMED | Named executrix in Richard Hull's 1559 will; explicitly identified as mother of Thomas Hull the Younger in verbatim 1572/3 Crewkerne marriage register: "Thomas Hull the sonne of Alice Hull widdow married with Johane Peson." Burial date specific per Crewkerne parish burial register. Maiden name unknown. |
| 264 | Robert Kent Sr. | abt. 1712, Goochland or Cumberland County, Virginia | 1782–1783, Halifax County, Virginia | CONFIRMED | Halifax County VA Will Book 1: will written Oct 10 1782, probated Jul 17 1783, names wife Mary and specifies remainder of estate equally divided among children including "Alexander Kent" explicitly. Also: 1784 will of Robert Kent Jr. gave "One negro boy named Champ to Alexander Kent." Family origin Cumberland/Goochland County explains Alexander's stated Cumberland County birthplace. |
POSSIBLE-TIER — DOCUMENTED HERE, OFF VIZ
- AHN 265 (wife of Robert Kent Sr., prob. maiden name unknown): POSSIBLE. Halifax County will names only "wife Mary"; no maiden name or parentage found. Off viz pending maiden name verification.
CONTRADICTIONS RESOLVED
- "Jane" as second wife of Rev. Joseph Hull — INCORRECT. 1635 Weymouth ship manifest (primary document) reads verbatim "Agnes Hull, his wife, aged 25 years." "Jane" appears in no source consulted.
- WikiTree Hull-549 paternal grandfather discrepancy — Hull-549 (Francis Hull) lists Thomas the Younger's grandfather as "Richard Hull (abt 1495–bef. 17 Jan 1552), Abbotsbury, Dorset." This is inconsistent with all other sources (Richard Hull c. 1510 Crewkerne, d. bef. 6 Jun 1559). The Abbotsbury data appears to be a data-entry error, likely confusion with Richard Peson/Pesinge of Abbotsbury (Thomas the Younger's maternal grandfather-in-law). Hull-549 should not be used as authority for Richard Hull's dates or birthplace.
- WikiTree "Providence Book of Probate p.64" citation — Cannot be verified from any digitized source. John Sayles Sr. had no recorded Providence probate (confirmed absent from the 1646–1899 index).
OPEN LEADS (next round)
- Richard Wilson (ahn 64) 1800 Iredell County household composition: access FamilySearch collection 1804228 or Ancestry 1800 US Census, search "Richard Wilson, Iredell County NC" — expected M26-45 bracket (born ~1767 = age ~33 in 1800) with wife in F16-45 bracket. Confirmation of age bracket upgrades from PROBABLE to near-CONFIRMED. Also search "Strain" / "Strane" near page 16 for Andrew Strain Sr.'s household.
- Alexander Kent (ahn 132) own will for ahn 66 link: access Halifax County Will Book A-1 (1833–1857) on FamilySearch for Alexander Kent's will from April–May 1841; extract all named heirs verbatim. If William Kent appears → ahn 132→66 link upgrades to CONFIRMED. If absent → downgrade to POSSIBLE.
- John Sayles Sr. 1670 deed verbatim text: search Early Records of the Town of Providence Vol. 4 (archive.org: earlyrecordsofto04prov) for June 24, 1670 Sayles-Arnold land transaction. If found with "father-in-law Mr. Roger Williams" language → direct primary source for Mary Williams-Sayles marriage → Roger Williams descent chain potentially upgrades to CONFIRMED.
- Rev. James Morgan Sr. (ahn 414) land grant search: register free account at nclandgrants.com, query grantee "James Morgan" in Rowan County (ID=85), Randolph County (ID=81), and Orange County (ID=73), year range 1760–1785.
