Frontier Round 5 — Part H
Headlines
- Daniel Gibby's WikiTree "orphaned, adopted" story stays uncited POSSIBLE (per standing instruction, off-viz) — and gets murkier, not clearer: no primary source found either way, plus a related result this round separately surfaced a WikiTree note that "DNA evidence reportedly contradicts" that same adoption tradition. Both the adoption story AND its DNA rebuttal are unverified secondhand claims — flagging both, adjudicating neither. Malachi Rowland stays POSSIBLE (zero hits across 3 SC/NC record sets searched again this round).
- Richard Burt's own origins remain unresolved ("native of Rhode Island," no town given) and his wife Lucy's maiden name was NOT found — the only lead is a single uncited Find A Grave "Airies" claim. Useful negative: two other same-name/era "Richard Burt"s (Bristol Co. MA, b.1748 and b.1745-Norton) were positively ruled out as merge candidates, closing off a contamination risk.
- Oakford/Rittenhouse: two real date corrections, one hypothesis weakened. John M. Oakford's death is June 19, 1898 (not the working "January 1898"), and Almira Oakford is b.~1832–d. June 5, 1870 (cert #3603) — both independently cross-matched against the same GGG index cert numbers already in the project. But a direct search of the GGG brides index for "Almira Rittenhouse" came back zero hits — no evidence links Almira herself to the Rittenhouse name. The "Jane E. Oakford" sister lead couldn't be re-verified either.
- Two new confirmed generations found on the Goodspeed side, plus a death-year correction with real stakes. Stephen Goodspeed's parents (Nathaniel Goodspeed + Sarah King) and his wife Bethiah Wooding's parents (Peter Wooding + Elizabeth Mallot) are now CONFIRMED via cross-matched Massachusetts vital records — genuine primary-source hits, not user-tree. Separately, this round's read of the primary source corrects Stephen Goodspeed's death year to 1 June 1763, not 1776 — see CONTRADICTIONS, this conflicts with the frontier pass in partG.
- GW "Wash" Gibby's 1909-vs-1915 death-date puzzle got a plausible explanation from my side that conflicts with partG's finding — see CONTRADICTIONS. My read: the "1915" is garbled TVA cemetery-relocation metadata embedded in a FindAGrave bio note, not a real second death date. Do not resolve this without reading both files together.
VIZ-CHANGES
- John M. Oakford (ahn 42, if the Lambert-line numbering holds — Eleanor(5)→Walter(10)→John James Lambert(20)/Josephine Oakford(21)→her parents 42/43): death date June 19, 1898 (corrects working "January 1898"); cert #16353, age 72 at death (→ b. ~1826). Tier: PROBABLE (cross-matched independently by two research passes hitting the same GGG cert number, but neither pass viewed the actual certificate image, and a same-round r2 follow-up could not itself reproduce the GGG lookup — see FOLLOW-UP-VERDICTS).
- Almira Oakford (ahn 43): b. ~1832 (was ~1835), d. 5 June 1870, cert #3603. Same PROBABLE tier/caveats as above. No Rittenhouse maiden-name link found — do not tag her as "Rittenhouse" on any person page.
- New nodes, Goodspeed line (Elizabeth Goodspead = ahn 353, per the tree doc's existing estimate table):
- Stephen Goodspeed (ahn 706) — b. 17 Sept. or 17 Dec. 1706 (month conflicts between the 1907 genealogy and the published Vital Records of Rochester, MA; day/year agree), Rochester MA; d. 1 June 1763, Scituate RI (intestate). Tier: CONFIRMED as Elizabeth's father via the same source that names her birth; PROBABLE that he is specifically the man in partG's frontier pass (which gives d. 1776 — flagged as a contradiction below, not merged).
- Bethiah Wooding/Wooden (ahn 707) — probably b. 5 July 1711, Beverly, Essex Co. MA (PROBABLE — one of two same-named daughters in the family, namesake-reuse convention not document-disambiguated); m. Stephen 1 Mar 1730/31, Rochester (CONFIRMED, verbatim town record quoted). Widow, granted administration of Stephen's estate 22 Oct 1763; own death unrecorded.
- Nathaniel Goodspeed (ahn 1412) + Sarah King (ahn 1413) — Stephen's parents. CONFIRMED, cross-matched between the 1907 Goodspeed family genealogy's verbatim Rochester town-record quote and the independently published Vital Records of Rochester, Massachusetts (3 of 4 sibling birth entries match exactly).
- Peter Wooding (ahn 1414) + Elizabeth Mallot/Mallett (ahn 1415) — Bethiah's parents. CONFIRMED via Beverly, MA Vital Records Vol. II (marriage, 1696) + Rochester, MA Vital Records (Peter's 1717 death) + a verbatim 1736 deed naming Peter as "our Honour'd Father... lately deseased."
- No change (reaffirmed, not upgraded):
- Rowena E. Rowland stays 1818–~1883, E3 floored — a WikiTree "circa 1895" claim was checked again and remains uncited; do NOT update the estimate off it.
- GW "Wash" Gibby's displayed 1909 death date is reaffirmed by this round's sources (cross-platform consistent, father's memorial child-list matches) but stays PROBABLE, not CONFIRMED — see CONTRADICTIONS re: partG's independent 1915 evidence.
- Daniel Alexander Gibby → George W. Gibby parent link stays PROBABLE — the r2 agent explicitly declined to upgrade it to CONFIRMED; no primary census image or probate record was independently pulled this round.
NEW-PEOPLE
- Stephen Goodspeed — proposed father of Elizabeth Goodspeed (Nathan Olney's wife, ahn 353). B. 17 Sept./17 Dec. 1706, Rochester MA; d. 1 June 1763, Scituate RI, intestate; likely a weaver. Tier: CONFIRMED as parent (verbatim town record + independent VR cross-match); his death year is a same-round correction, flagged vs. partG.
- Bethiah Wooding (Wooden/Woodin) — Stephen's wife, mother of Elizabeth Goodspeed. Probably b. 5 July 1711, Beverly MA. Tier: PROBABLE (namesake ambiguity with an earlier same-named 1708 baptism in the same family). Administered Stephen's estate 1763; signed by mark (illiterate); own death unrecorded.
- Nathaniel Goodspeed + Sarah King — Stephen's parents, m. 21 Dec. 1705, Scituate/Rochester MA. Tier: CONFIRMED.
- Peter Wooding + Elizabeth Mallot (Mallett) — Bethiah's parents, m. 15 Oct. 1696, Beverly MA; Peter d. 17 May 1717, Rochester MA. Tier: CONFIRMED.
- John M. Oakford (b. ~1826, d. 19 June 1898) — NYC Metropolitan Policeman from 7 Apr 1855 (9th Patrol District, Greenwich Village), promoted Captain by 1866, still a court attendant 1869. Tier: PROBABLE (occupational trail independently re-verified via primary archive.org texts twice; vital-record cert dates not independently re-verified in the most recent pass). Not yet placed in the tree's numbered/estimated-dates system beyond the Lambert-line slot noted above; the Oakford↔Rittenhouse link itself is NOT established.
- Almira Oakford (b. ~1832, d. 5 June 1870) — John M.'s wife. Tier: PROBABLE, same caveats. No Rittenhouse maiden name evidence found.
FOLLOW-UP-VERDICTS
- Rowena E. Rowland's parents (Malachi Rowland + Sarah Caler): r2 did NOT verify. Zero independent hits across three separately-searched SC/NC primary record sets. Stays POSSIBLE, matches the tree doc's existing downgrade — no change needed.
- George W. "Wash" Gibby death date: r2 reaffirmed 1909 as internally consistent across WikiTree + 2 Find A Grave memorials (his own and his father's child-list). It also produced a specific explanation for where "1915" comes from — see CONTRADICTIONS, because that explanation conflicts with what the OTHER slicer's frontier pass independently found for the same number.
- Daniel Alexander Gibby → George W. Gibby parent link: r2 explicitly self-downgraded this from an "implied CONFIRMED" (matching-sibling-sets across two derivative platforms) to PROBABLE — no primary 1850-1880 census image or 1889 probate record was independently pulled.
- John M. Oakford / Almira Oakford vital dates (June 19 1898 cert #16353; June 5 1870 cert #3603): r2 independently re-verified the occupational timeline (policeman → captain, 1855-1876) from fresh archive.org primary texts, matching the prior round's report almost exactly (two small page-number citation discrepancies found, likely OCR digit-misreads, not real conflicts). But r2 could NOT itself reproduce the GGG cert-index lookup this round and explicitly flagged the vital dates as "PROBABLE — unverified-by-me," not double-confirmed. Net: the vital dates are corroborated by one successful direct hit (idx18's pass) plus one non-reproduction (idx30's pass, likely a tooling/access issue this round, not a factual conflict) — treat as PROBABLE pending a third check.
CONTRADICTIONS (vs tree doc / other part files — logged, not adjudicated)
- Stephen Goodspeed's death year: 1763 (this file) vs. 1776 (partG). partG's frontier-round entry (from the original goodspeed-parentage agent) gives "Stephen Goodspeed (1706–1776, Scituate RI, intestate)." My round's follow-up agent read the same 1907 Goodspeed Family Genealogy book and found the death year is 1763 — "corroborated internally by a second independent passage in the same book about son Hosea's age at his father's death, clearly gives 1763" — and explicitly frames this as a correction of "a frontier-agent claim of 1776." I have NOT edited partG or the tree doc to resolve this; it needs a synthesis pass reading both agents' verbatim book quotes side by side. My round's version has the stronger internal-cross-check, but I am logging, not overriding.
- GW "Wash" Gibby death date, 1909 vs. 1915 — same underlying string, two different reads. partG's frontier gw-gibby-death agent found a federal TVA Cemetery Relocation database row for "Gibbey, Wash" giving death year 1915 (paired with a birth year of 1860, which conflicts with his well-established 1844 birth) and leaned PROBABLE-1915 on that basis. My round's follow-up, working from the same Find A Grave bio-note text, decoded the embedded fragment "~1860 1915 Fontana Reservoir NC Swain Judson Public 7-195 1943 Reloc. Judson 4 A-7" as cemetery-relocation-survey metadata — i.e., "1860" and "1915" bracket the Judson Public cemetery's own active span, not a person's birth/death years, with 7-195 as the original plot number and "Judson 4 A-7" as the 1943 relocation destination plot. If my reading is right, partG's "1860" birth-year conflict resolves itself (it was never a birth year) and the TVA row is not really independent evidence for a 1915 death at all — but I cannot confirm this without seeing the actual TVA Cemetery Relocation database's column structure, which neither agent viewed directly. This is the single highest-value reconciliation item between the two part-files and should be checked before either number is presented as settled.
- Tree doc's "Daniel Gibby birthplace Haywood-vs-Anderson SC" (still open): not resolved this round either. New unconfirmed wrinkle: a Haywood Co. NC estate-file index lists "Bryson, Anderson (1826)" — i.e., a person named Anderson Bryson, not a place. Raises an unverified hypothesis that "Anderson" in some family retellings may be a personal name (a Bryson relative) bleeding into a place-name reading ("Anderson, SC"), but this is speculation on my part from a single index-line coincidence, not a finding to act on.
- Tree doc's Daniel Gibby "orphaned/adopted" tradition, POSSIBLE/off-viz (per standing instruction): this round adds that a separate WikiTree research note claims DNA evidence "reportedly" contradicts that same adoption tradition, pointing to three unnamed candidate biological family lines instead. Neither the adoption story nor its DNA rebuttal is documented beyond a secondhand mention — both stay unverified, and I am flagging the tension between them rather than picking a side.
- Jane E. Oakford (1855–1880), the tree doc's existing "first-ever birth-family candidate" for Josephine (logged 7/21 as POSSIBLE/uncited with an open date conflict): this round's r2 could not find any matching entry for her in the GGG death index at all. Doesn't kill the lead (the index may simply not cover her), but weakens it further — logged, not removed.
FOUNDER-HANDS
- Order the actual certificate images, now that both are cert-numbered from two independent hits: John M. Oakford's 1898 death cert (#16353, Manhattan) and Almira Oakford's 1870 death cert (#3603) from NYC Municipal Archives — era-appropriate NYC certs printed parents'/maiden names on the face, which would settle the Oakford-Rittenhouse question directly.
- Redirect the Oakford probate search to Manhattan, not Brooklyn/Kings — his death was recorded in Manhattan and his entire documented occupational life (1855–1876+) was Greenwich Village-based. New York County Surrogate's Court, "Oakford," 1898–1901.
- A browser/login session would unlock several stalled items: Daniel Alexander Gibby's 1850–1880 census images (Cherokee/Macon/Swain Co. NC) and his 1889 Swain Co. probate — the single best remaining anchor for the George W. Gibby parent link; Richard Burt's DAR/Rev-War record and Arnold's RI Vital Records (a birth match could reveal his own parents and RI hometown); Green-Wood Cemetery's JS-rendered burial search and NYC's historicalvitalrecords.nyc.gov portal (both blocked to static fetch this round).
- Reconcile the Stephen Goodspeed death-year and GW Gibby death-year contradictions above — both need a human (or a dedicated synthesis sub-agent) to read the two part-files' verbatim source quotes side by side; I deliberately did not pick a winner.
