Founder publishes relaunch essay (the highest-priority open decision, founder-owned, publish-button) and picks Portfolio-vs-VI framing on the dbt-Tickered brief so drafting can proceed. In parallel, Ray builds the coupled cluster: issue-send pipeline that emits Resend webhook → DB → per-issue open/CTR snapshots for free. This single build resolves the load-bearing sensors gap AND the load-bearing tools gap simultaneously and produces the email-engagement-instrumentation modular component MAC drip + Squarely retention will inherit.

Under-formalized. What exists: founder reads replies qualitatively; /design-critic runs structurally per design variant. What's missing: per-issue post-mortem that asks (a) which hook/angle landed (open + reply signal), (b) which CTA converted (subscribe + click signal), (c) what to feed forward into next /research-brief. Today's loop is heroic-founder-reads-replies, not structured-diagnostic-to-experiment. Instrumentation gaps in Layer 2 (open rate, CTR, cohort engagement) are upstream blockers — you can't formalize a feedback loop without the sensors that feed it. The coupled cluster is open/CTR sensor + templated-send actuator + diagnostic-feeds-next-brief loop.

    No way to attribute forwards today. Would need referral-link or Resend-tracking.

    CRITICAL COMPONENT (founder pick implied by audit). Resend supports open tracking but not yet wired into a per-issue dashboard. Most-binding gap; blocks the feedback loop. Cross-bet: same email-engagement-instrumentation component MAC drip + Squarely transactional emails will need.

    Coupled with open-rate-per-issue — same Resend webhook → DB → snapshot infrastructure.
  • medium Subscriber cohort engagement (true-fan core vs passive)
    1,000 True Fans target is unmeasurable without segmentation. Lower priority pre-launch while cohort is small enough to read by hand.

    Most load-bearing missing sensor — the loop closer. Directly downstream of open/CTR per-issue dashboard. Feeds /research-brief actuator.

    Subscribe surface is over-instrumented; SEND surface is unbuilt. Every issue is bespoke instead of templated, so per-issue metrics aren't naturally captured. Coupled with open-rate / CTR sensors — build this in a way that emits sensor data for free and #1+#2 sensor gaps resolve mechanically. Cross-bet: same templated-send tool will power MAC drip, Squarely retention, every future product launch.
